Sandwiches in North Lincoln Park/South Lakeview

I am sorry if this post is redundant but it is pretty hard to search threads for sandwiches since it is such a common term.

I am really in the mood for a great sandwich. I live just a little bit north of Diversey and just have a craving. Any places I should look out for?

Pastoral has outstanding sandwiches. My 2 favorites right now are the Campagne (pate with cornichons, gruyere, and mustard) and the Canard Balsamico (duck confit, pickled onions, fromage d'affinoise).

There are several good burger places in that area but for a really great lunch experience I would hop on the bus and head over to the GNR...

My wife would second the Bourgeois Pig reco. She loves that place. Re Costello's, I went to the weblink and was surprised they have only two locations; for some reason I've thought of them as a "Jimmy Johns/Potbelly/Quizno" type chain, though I knew they were locally owned. I guess I just find myself going past their two locations often enough to create an impression of ubiquity in my mind. I also think it's their graphics/signage that creates the big chain impression. I'm more inclined to go there now that I know they're basically a Mom-and-Pop with one additional location!

NY Deli should be close enough to get the job done. Half Shell has great burgers and a crab cake sandwich, tender fried scallops on a pita, soft shell crab, morsels of clams packed in pita bread with sauce on a bun for lunch as well as a po' boy (11:30 to 4:30 daily) I need to get over there more for lunch. The prices are cheap and all come with a good amount of shoestring fries.

I'd 2nd the NY Deli recommendation. Also, give Fattoush a shot for a very good shawarma sandwich (chicken or beef), as well as great Lebanese food including one of the best tabbouleh's I've had. A lot of folks around here are fans of Frances Deli, but everything I've had there has been fairly mediocre.

I've always liked Panes on Sheffield and Wellington, a block from Illinois Masonic Hospital. I cut back my bread consumption a while ago, so I don't go as often as I did in the past, but
I've never had a bad meal there. The Super Panes which had Bacon, Turkey, Ham and Honey Mustard was a standout for me, and I also really enjoyed the Oaxacan Pork Sandwich, too.

Many wonderful options noted, most all of which I will heartily concur with as a resident of the neighborhood. As an option to the mediocre Frances', I will note the Bagel Restaurant and Deli, if you're in the mood for the best Reuben this side of Manny's.

I would also mention Sultan's Market if a Falafel Sandwich is something you're thinking about. While this is a small place with just a few tables, the food is fresh and has the necessary 'zip' required of Middle Eastern cuisine.

This is one of my favorite sandwiches in the neighborhood. Great tasting, big enough to fill me up and only about $5.50 which includes a small bag of chips and a pickle spear.

I agree w/the Panes recommendation, I was hooked on the stuff when I was in physical therapy at Masonic. Not sure why anyone in their right mind would eat Subway when there is Panes. I like the Pollo Diablo, Pompazo and their BLT is great on a slightly sweet bread. I've never had a bad experience there.

Panes is outrageously good in my opinion. I no longer live in the neighborhood, but am constantly finding myself back there. I love their veggie cabra and their portabello with pesto on focaccia. Also, they have stellar desserts. In addition to the afore-mentioned monster cookie, if they have some orange bread pudding or white chocolate rice pudding, GET IT!

Panes gets my vote too...I've only been there twice (had the Pollo Diablo the first time, and the Oaxacan Pork the second time), came away full & happy both times.

I also concur that Frances Deli has been disappointing every time I've been there. Last time we were heading to Toro, I noticed that Frances looked closed for some reason. Not lights-off-closed-for-the-day closed, but tables-and-booths-missing-visible-plywood-laying-around closed. Anyone know if anything is (or was) going on there?

Wow. Thank you guys so much for the Panes rec. Really fantastic. My girlfriend and I shared a BLT and a Oaxacan Pork and both are delicious and inexpensive. We will be regulars in no time I am sure.

Wow. You ever go to a place in your neighborhood and it's so good that you actually get a bit angry that it's taken this long to find it when you could have been enjoying it all along? That's been my experience with Pastoral as I've gone their the last two weekends in a row. All three sandwiches I've tried have been exceptional (the Serrano ham and manchego w/ quince paste is ridiculously good), as has been their Greek salad. This place is a bit pricey, but it's now far and away my favorite lunch spot in the neighborhood. Thanks for the tip!

No problem. Pastoral is a real gem, and a true reply to those who would argue that the area is a "culinary wasteland". The sandwiches are really just the tip of the iceberg. Between their huge cheese selections, their meats, olives, wines, breads, etc, it's just a fantastic place. It's my go to spot for stocking up for picnics, BBQs, and Ravinia trips during the summer.
