Anyone know where I can find SAF instant yeast in the Chicago area? I have tried all previously-mentioned sources (at least here and on CHOW) and have come up empty handed.

    Thanks!

I've picked it up at GFS before. Unbelievably cheap too.

Andy's Fruit Ranch has SAF, too. They also carry Fleischmann's and other European brands in 1 lb packages.

Thanks for all the responses--I've tried those sources in the past (aside from Sunset), but will just try again I guess. From what I can tell, it seems like these places will get shipments of this stuff on a very periodic basis. Maybe I can just ask them when they'll have it next.

I've found it periodically at Whole Foods (either Sauganash or Halsted).

In any case, the other brand at Andy's Fruit Ranch works well, if they don't have the SAF.

I found it at Hyde Park Produce on 53rd Street. They had at least 5 packages last time I bought it (about a month ago).

I recently ordered it online from Barry Farms. They have many interesting flours and ingredients - sorghum, millet, gluten free items, etc. Not sure how the price compares, but I like it when things show up on my doorstep and I didn't have to go anywhere to get them

Again, thanks for all the responses--I actually found it over the weekend at Andy's Fruit Ranch on Kedzie. They had a ton of it (but only the "gold" label--no red label) along with two other varieties of instant yeast (Fleischmann's and an eastern european brand that I've used in the past with inconsistent results). I was really surprised at the selection, frankly, since I never see anything but active and fresh yeast in most other groceries.

Just saw 2-pound (!) bulk packages of SAF at Joong Boo (The Korean grocery) for the low low price of $6.

Saw it at my Costco in Glenview. I usually get mine from King Arthur.
