I am up in the Glendale and Brown Deer area this week and next working some pretty long hours, and my heart can't take any more butter burgers or Kopp's ice cream for a few days. Any help on some good eats nearby? Thanks in advance!

North Shore Bistro in Bayside is a go to for many I know in the area, well prepared, if not imaginative, American with nods to France, Italy and beyond. NSB would fit nicely in the Lettuce Entertain family.

Straight up Brown Deer Road in Menomonee Falls is Harvey Moy, which I've posted about here. Nicely done, if typical, American Cantonese on the surface, a world of deliciousness, including Salt and Pepper head and tail on shrimp, roast duck, crispy noodle dishes and chili oil for the asking.

Benji's Deli has an outpost in the same shopping center as North Shore Bistro. Not destination deli, but solid.

If you are weary of Solly's Butter Burger, though I don't see how that is possible, try Lyle's. Just a few blocks away from Solly's but the burger's are a different style with a different clientele. I wrote about Lyle's long ago in a far away land called chowhound.

I think I will sneak my best of the Midwest nominee for greasy diner burger in this post as well, as it is in Milwaukee. Lyle's just North of Capitol Drive on Green Bay Ave. Thin, flavorful, greasy burgers with fried and raw onions served on buttered buns that have been run through a really cool free-standing toasting conveyor belt contraption. Skinny fries, crisp, and a very interactive social atmosphere. Lots of joshing with the grill man.

Lyle's is not staffed or patronized by June and Ward Cleaver, those more comfortable with their diner clientele driving new SUV's as opposed to taxies and beater Pontiacs should head, just a few miles away, to Solly's for a butter burger, which is a hell of a good burger in it's own right.

I'll give it a bit more thought and post if I come up with additional suggestions.

    Enjoy,
    Gary

Here are a few places I've enjoyed on recent trips to Milwaukee

Elliot's Bistro: this is a really nice bistro, food is prepared well. Fun atmosphere. I'm told that a distant relative opened it.

The Milwaukee Public Market has a great bakery, fish store, a branch of The Spice House, wine and beer, etc. There are also a few places there to get prepared food.

This is a quite old Serbian restaurant that is "old school" in every way. Great food.

Jack Pandl's is an old German restaurant. I like it a lot.

Thanks so far Gary and Darren.

It is not that I am sick of Sully's, I just need to supplement my food intake with something that will take a little longer to kill me.

Darren, I haven't mapped any of those things yet but are those more towards the noth side of Milwaukee? I am never against driving for good food, but when working 10-14 hours a day at the job site and still having work to do ata the hotel, I don't want to go too far.

I meant to acknowledge that these may not be close to where you are.

Three Brothers is south of downtown.
    The Public Market is downtown.
The other two are north of downtown.

I would map them on google to see exactly how far they are from you.

I had a decent meal at Harvey's Central Grille in Mequon. Couldn't tell you what I ate, but I know I liked it. The options on the north side of Milwaukee are not extensive. My friends live in Whitefish Bay, so we end up at North Shore Bistro a lot. Harvey's is another nice option to have.

I grew up in the northern suburbs of Milwaukee, and ate lots of Solly's and Kopp's - definitely my favorites in the area. I agree that North Shore Bistro is a good recommendation for a little more variety. I also like Calderone Club in Fox Point for a pretty good thin crust pizza. It's not Zaffiro's, but I've always been happy with their food, whether eating there or for take out. Not too far from where you are at all.

Had a damn fine meal at River Lane Inn, in Brown Deer, last summer. The specialty is fish and seafood. River Lane is the kind of place where everybody knows everybody, very supper clubby.

Not sure if they take reservations, but if they do, you should make one. They're very busy for dinner.

Be sure to check out the fish cheeks if they have them on the menu that night.

Il Ritrovo in Sheboygan is awesome and is a certified Verace Pizza Napoletana establishment. I also recommend Larry's Market in Milwaukee (but right near Brown Deer), where just about every locally-made artisanal cheese (and tons of other gourmet items) can be found.

Thanks for this - am in the area often enough, had no idea about Lyle's. Will definitely stop in the next time (personally Ive never been overly enamoured of Solly's burgers despite going a few times - their shakes were very good though. But with Kopp's custard only a half-mile away, have given Solly's a miss the past few times). You dont happen to know if Lyle's is open Sundays, do you? (I know Solly's isnt).

As for the OP.. my standard rec if youre around the Milwaukeeish area is actually to try and drive up one time to Oconomoc, and try Todd's Grille. The burger is the best Ive had, but pretty much everything is reasonable and great (prime rib sandwich on Monday's, wings on Tuesdays, FishFry on Fridays etc).

Another rec - this comes second-hand, I havent been here myself, but an Indian friend (who is a Devon regular, likes Khan and Usmaniya) claims some very very good Indo-Pak style food can be found at a tiny little restaurant called Anmol. Supposedly a tiny place that looks like nothing from the outside, but with very good food - friend was particularly raving about a "Handi gosht" dish IIRC. Anmol is at 711 West Mitchell Street, only a few miles away from Glendale.

I just wanted to say thanks for the Larry's Market rec. It was right down the street from my hotel and I was able to pick up a tasty sammich for the road and some nice cheeses for the weekend. :D

Solly's had closed for the night when we were in Glendale recently, so we thought we'd check out Lyle's. Alas, Lyle's has closed permanently.
