Seems like a match made in heaven to me: the populist Ray hitches up with the people's pastry. No one (particularly on this board) seems to take either of them seriously, so it seems a very sensible union of mutually supportive and (in their own way) beloved icons (or at least marketing concepts).

That's aggressively unfunny, leaning toward being offensive. I think even Tony Boudain would be hard-pressed to find that amusing.

I find Jimmy Fallon to be one of the unfunniest "comics", yet setting Rachel Ray on fire makes me smile. I have a sick sense of humor, so I'd love to see the promo but I still won't watch the show. Who's giving Jimmy Fallon a show? It reminds me of an episode of the Simpsons when Bart & Milhouse just did something naughty and were laughing themselves silly over it:

Homer: What are you two laughing at? And if you say Jimmy Fallon...I'll know you're lying...

Any "comedy" that attempts to promote violence against women as being somehow hilarious is "aggressively unfunny" in my book, be it Rachael Ray as target or anyone else.

Also, kindly keep your cheap personal insults on this matter to yourself in the future. My opinion on this matter is no less valid than yours.

South Park has a theme? :o

I think that promo is pretty gross. I recognize that this is a matter of taste. Given the material that type of comedy tends to use, it perplexes me as to how people can proclaim that it's definitely not offensive. As far as I can tell, the makers of it would probably consider it a failure if a certain percentage of people were not offended.

    Again, have you watched it?

This promo, while maybe not funny, was designed to show how inept and unprepared Mr. Fallon is, to the point that even during a simple cooking promo he can't manage to help out without setting his guest on fire. He acts like an unprepared goofball which causes mayhem. Ms. Ray is an innocent victim who is saved at the end by the production staff.

"Attempts to promote violence against women" is not only a stretch here, it's simply incorrect. At worst, it's an insult to male talk-show hosts.

Furthermore, nothing in Ed's comments was a "cheap personal insult". He suggested (through the use of a film reference) that you were prematurely jumping to a conclusion, a point to which I agree.

    Best,
    Michael

sundevilpeg. This isn't violence against women. It's a gag and one of the performers happens to be a woman. It would be just as funny (or unfunny) if the chef were Mario Batali.

Also, a key fact is that RR is in on the joke. She knew the whole bit was that she'd be set on fire by Fallon's incompetence, and she happily signed on. Unless she was governed by the dictum of "no publicity is bad publicity" (and I don't think she's that undiscriminating, although others here are sure to disagree!), the only conclusion one can reach is that she thought the bit was funny. That doesn't mean others can't find it not funny, but it does remove the offensive taint of exploitation.

In fairness, I doubt you would have described this as your fantasy had it been Mario Batali. Perhaps sundevilpig was reacting not to the promo, but to the notion that you fantasize about Rachel Ray on fire. Then again, maybe your fantasy includes you as a firefighter coming to her rescue, and then carrying her off into the sunset to be your bride. Not to get overly personal here, but in my version of this fantasy Rachel Ray is replaced with Anna Kournikova, and instead of being on fire, she's drowning. I'm the lifeguard who comes to her rescue.
