I have family coming in and staying at the Sheraton River North. Any suggestions for fine and a little less expensive than "fine" dining in the area? No Chinese restaurants was a request. Thanks!

We enjoy taking out-of-towners to Atwood Cafe. It's a historic art-nouveau space with lovely food and service at below fine-dining prices.

In the 'less expensive than "fine"' category, there's Cyrano's. Solid French bistrot food.

You'll be in walking distance of Coco Pazzo Cafe (assuming we're talking about the same Sheraton), a good source for mid-range Italian:

Beyond easy walking distance the options are countless.

I've had great success, especially with our family's picky eaters, if that's a concern, at Petterino's. It's a LEYE restaurant and if you don't want a steak, the entrees top out at $24 or less. Steaks are a little less than $40 and sides (for two) are five or six bucks. It's crazy busy before curtain time and nice and quiet afterwards... lunch gets rushed at noon and clears out by one-ish.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll run some of these by them.

And, as I must do every time Petterino's is referenced, I'll mention that they have the best scratch-made chocolate pudding in the city.

This thread http://www.lthforum.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=17294 is lunch recs near the Gleacher Center (across the road from the Sheraton) but a lot of the suggestions are good for dinner too. For something casual, particularly late, Fox & Obel Cafe is a good choice.

I'd second Club Lago. It has an old-school Italian feel, rather like the places you always see in mob movies. (In fact there are signs on the wall that scenes from some movie or other was filmed there.) That might be fun for out of town guests.
