Having griped about a recent meal a few posts ago, I think it's only appropriate to add that I was back for more yesterday morning and had a terrific meal of corned beef hash, eggs, etc.

Took a friend from out of town there Sunday Morn. Place was full but there was no wait for a table. They were out of CBH at 10:30 AM so I just had the eggs and ham. My buddy had the grits. he said they were overcooked, I thought they were great. I like this place, just wish it were not so out of my way to get to.

A visit to The Depot yesterday found them in fine form. The place was jumping around 12:30 and there was even a short wait for our party of 5. We just missed the big table in the back, but a whole section of the counter opened up, so we mounted our stools and got a ring side seat of the hot and heavy grill action.

I started with a bowl of the soup of the day, corn chowder, which was nice and rich and clearly house made and a chocolate phosphate to drink.

I also got the pot roast sandwich, which is a thing of beauty. A perfectly composed taste of comfort. The beef, frizzled onions, bun and gravy all combine into a perfect symphony of flavor greater than the individual parts. This sandwich is a work of genius! Can you tell I liked it quite a bit?

Gary ordered a turkey club which was also very good. the sandwich is made with real turkey and even included some tomatoes that, considering the time of year, weren't all that bad.

Of course, for me no meal at the Depot Diner is complete without some of their made-to-order donut holes. Now that's good living.

I only wish The Depot was located closer to my house, but that still doesn't keep me from making the trek to get there. It's worth it!

Headed over to have lunch at The Depot today and was sad to find it closed up tight, blinds drawn. There was a sign in the window that said they were "temporarily closed" with no further information given. I hope that is only a temporary closure, as I do love the place...

Say it's not so! The website's a placeholder, but maybe it's always been? The phone goes to the usual voicemail, but at 8 on a Sunday morning they should be up and running.

This is ostensibly what mchodera says two post up. The Depot has been temporarily closed a few times in my memory so I'd venture to say it's early to take to the shovel and buy roses.

The phrasing of that sign ("We have temporarily closed our doors," "we will keep you posted") does not sound like vacation to me, but that's pure conjecture.

My wife was pretty bummed yesterday - post-call, in dire need of a pick-me-up after a 30 hour shift with 2 hours of sleep - when it was still closed upon driving by. She'll be greatly relieved to hear they are open once again, and sure to stop by within the next day or two as well.

Talked to Robert today and they could use all of our support! Fitzgeralds is even donating the space to have some bands play for FREE to help out the Depot crew! Wishbone might even donate a little food as well. So some sort of a Depot fundraiser is in the works! This is great to see how other folks in the business actually care for the well being of others in the same business!! Will be taking the family out for a great breakfast this weekend! Hope to see others as well.

    LTH,

The Depot was in full swing Saturday lunch, bustling happy hungry crowd and my fried catfish fillet, there were a couple of orders leftover from the Friday special, was moist and crisp.

Took the inlaws and their friends tonight. Our choices were LSC or the DD. DD won the vote. The inlaw's friends were questioning us on our dessert order after they were stuffed from soup and open faced turkey sammiches. After they said - "no way" to dessert, we countered with "We'll take two orders of donuts, and an order of bread pudding." They were totally shocked. "We can't eat another bite, are you kidding?"

    No leftovers.

All thanked Robert profusely for "Sunday Dinner."
Simple food done well. A dying art.

Stopped in for dinner with my wife last night at 7:00, and got the last available seats in the place - every booth and all but 1 stool were taken. Had another fantastic pot roast sandwich, and the wife opted for her favorite, the meatloaf sandwich. Bread pudding was excellent, and left us relieved that we didn't make a bad call by passing on the donuts.

Yet another great meal at the Depot, and nice to see them busy on a Friday evening.

I hope to be at the fundraiser (even though as a fundraiser, I usually advise people against having fundraisers for for-profits, if you can parse that).

There is great irony in holding the fundraiser at Klas. That's like holding the fundraiser at CJs or any number of other places that are also in dire want of customers. It's actually pretty cool.

I agree, it's odd to fund raise for a for-profit. Further oddness: the event is being managed by an Oak Parker, not someone from the immediate neighborhood that DAD serves.

All that noted, I wish DAD the best of luck and hope they get through this tough time.

most of the patrons are oakparkians among other collar towns, owner had resided in oak park previously. fundraising takes on many purposes. these willing folks desire something to continue that has had some recent adversities. maybe it's odd cuz it aint a common thing to unite for a community ma&pa joint these days??

Jeez, didn't any of you ever see It's a Wonderful Life?

Anyway, if this achieves the dual purpose of helping Depot Diner (where, incidentally, we went for breakfast this morning) and getting some folks to actually step inside Klas for the first time, it'll be a heck of a good thing.
