Since it's the last day of school, my Dad suggested lunch out. He loves Mexican, so I said, "Meet me at school." Our usual jaunt is El Faro just East of 31st and Pulaski. He wanted a cocktail, so I thought, "Hey, Mi Tierra, I saw it on Check! Please! and I drive past it nearly every day. Maybe I should have gone to Nuevo Leon, instead.
This was very average Mexican food. I enjoyed the Margarita pitchers at $17 a pop. Here's what we ordered: Two combos that included: Taco, Tostata, Tamale and Burrito, Enchilada, and Taco. I ordered the lunch portion of Flautas and Chile Relleno. The waiter approached 15 minutes later stating "no relleno." As per usual, the tamale was oversteamed. My flautas has zilcho flavor, the burrito overpriced and understuffed.
Overall, I like the skylights in the main dining room and atmosphere. The service was VERY slow. We asked for our check twice before it appeared. Food was slow to arrive.
Everything, except the lunch specials, were 3-6 dollars more than El Faro a few blocks away. The atmosphere wasn't worth paying that much more....
I always order tamales the day before from a neigborhood tacqueria. When I pick them up, they are still steaming in the pot. My favorite are queso verde. Where else, anyone?
