i've found something to love at costco- the mushroom filled giant ravioli in the refrigerator case. they have a strong mushroom flavor which isn't always the case. i dress them simply(!) with truffle oil and shavings of parmesan. justjoan

I was at the Niles Costco over the weekend and noticed "The ¡Salpicón! Cookbook: Contemporary Mexican Cuisine" amongst their books for $23.99. I haven't had a chance to make anything from it yet, but the recipes and photographs look good!

Has anyone ever see Fage yogurt at Costco? The Addicted to Costco blog mentions a 35.3 oz for $6.99 last summer.

I haven't seen Fage. But last weekend, the Costco on Clybourne had the Chobani brand of Greek yogurt. I think it was one of those multipacks of individual serving size containers. Has anyone tried this brand? How does it compare to Fage?

Yes and less than favorably, in my opinion. It was a bit runnier and not nearly as tangy. I also like the accompanying ingredients (fruit, honey) in the Fage products much better. Just my .02.

So I was able to find out that only AZ, CA, CO, NM, NV, TX, and UT carry the Fage. How do we get our local stores to carry it?

Picked up vacuum-packed Plume de Veau "Veal Leg Cutlets" at the Lincoln Park Costco today for $4.99/lb. They also had veal tenderloin but the price was...quite a bit more. Don't care for tenderloin of any kind so I didn't look and didn't stop to think I might post about it. Sorry!

They've had sliced veal before but it wasn't packaged like this and I'm fairly certain it was more expensive so I'm not sure if this is a variation on a theme or a new product.

I am so, so happy that Costco still has the USDA prime strips and ribeyes. I'm even happier that some of them are marbled like this one:

    Ed,

I picked up some rib-eyes that looked just like that this week for $9.99 per pound. Not quite as tender as I would have liked, but the flavor was just terrific.

Can anyone tell me if Costco (Niles or Clybourn locations) is carrying decent beer? I'm looking for Goose Island (312 or Summertime) in particular, but would be interested in what they have. I haven't been to Costco for a couple of months and wasn't looking for beer last time.

    Thanks!

They have cases of Goose Summertime and cases of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, along with other, less interesting beers.

The Oakbrook and Naperville locations have Two Brothers Hop Juice bombers for $5.59. That's at least $1.49 cheaper than most places are selling them for.

Oddly enough, I just purchased this two weeks ago. I'm determined to start making more baked goods and this seemed like a good way to force myself into it.

Used it last night for Mark Bittman's pizza dough recipe quite successfully, it was a terrific crust.

ConAgra Mills, Harvest Hotel and Restaurant All Purpose Flour. IIRC, it was $7-8 for the 25lb bag. I'd be curious to hear what more experienced bakers think of it. So far, it is serving my humble purposes quite well.

Been buying it for over a year now. I use a dog food container that I got at Container Store that is on wheels to store the flour. This works out great because I can wheel it to my mixer. I find the flour good and I love the convenience of not running out of flour every couple of weeks.

Are you a big baker? Sweet or savory? I am very, very partial to my beloved Red Band flour. I know part of it has to do with coming from the South but it just seems better than Gold Medal & others offered in the Chicagoland area. I mean non-specialty flours, specifically.

    pairs4life,

Is your Red Band flour a soft wheat like White Lily? Southern general purpose (gp) flour is soft wheat with our regions gp flour is winter wheat. My Dad notices the differences in baked goods made with either flour. It surprises me, because I don't consider him too observant in the kitchen.
