I used to get tons of birthday freebie coupons via email, and this year I got gypped.

Therefore I decided to make a list of places where you can sign up and get a free something or other. Feel free to add to the list.

    Caribou Coffee
    Carnivale

If you sign up for their emails:
Carnivale will send you an email for $25 off the week of your birthday
Flattop Grill offers a free dinner during the month of your birthday

Since my birthday is in December, I've never actually used either of these offers b/c there's hardly enough time.

If you sign up for Lettuce Entertain You's frequent diner program, they send you a $20 certificate (with several restrictions) for your birthday each year. If you sign up as a couple, you both get birthday certificates off the same membership.

$15, not 20. Unless they consider my wife and I less worthy for some reason  Hers arrived in the mail not that long ago though - she has an April 1 birthday.

They used to be restricted to having to be used within 15 days of your birthday, but that appears to have been lifted. Now the restrictions are largely the same as their holiday bonus gift certificates, sans the "must use by April 15th" part.

My wife's birthday is April 5, so she just got hers as well. It was $20. Maybe they send different amounts depending on the membership level? We have a gold membership due to getting points for my company's holiday party a few years.

My birthday was April 4th and I was trying to come up with places that would hook me up with free stuff. I did get a $15 gift card to Lettuce Entertain You (as did my girlfriend, who is on the same frequent diner card). Wildfire gave me a free flourless chocolate cake with ice cream simply by saying it was my birthday. Stoney River Steakhouse mailed me out a free dessert card that can be used anytime. Texas Roadhouse emailed me a free appetizer coupon.

So where did I actually eat on my B-day? Patty's Diner!

Trattoria 10 has a goodie - with a minimum $25 purchase, the Birthday Boy or Girl gets a full dinner gratis - soup, salad or "small plate,", followed by a choice of pasta or entree - no exclusions noted, other than that it can't be used for the bar Happy Hour buffet. The value of the dinner can go up to $40. Also, my b-day is January 31, and my cert was good until April 1. (!) Highly recommended!

Texas de Brazil has a club - when you sign up online or at the restasurant you get 25% off (for up to maybe 6 people) for the first couple of weeks and then they send you coupons on your birthday and anniversary good for one free meal (not bad considering it runs ~$45/person) and if you mention it's your birthday they will often comp a dessert as well.

Ok, call me a sucker. I decided to take advantage of some of these email sign-ups, listed above. I signed up to get emails from some of these restaurants. In exchange I got various coupons.

One was for one of two appetizers (free) with and entrée from On the Border. I have driven by this restaurant, but never been. So this weekend my wife and I went to a movie and stopped at On the Border. We started with the Ultimate Loaded Queso as our free appetizer, chips and salsa, and a couple of margaritas.

We both agreed the appetizer was truly awful and were glad it was free. Obviously we didn’t finish it. Then we ordered tacos, chicken for her and steak for me. They both came with beans and rice. We both agreed these were only OK, and this was a stretch.

However, we both liked the margaritas ($7.60 each, I think) and the chips. The salsa was passable. Probably would not go back unless I could bring my own salsa and not have to eat any of their food.

As I was leaving I told her On the Border does for Mexican food what Denny’s does for American food. She agreed.

My problem with Denny's is that everything tastes like toast. I told Pie Dude early on that I'll eat just about anywhere, including diners, but if he takes me to Denny's we're through.

I recently cashed in some birthday freebies and I'm back to report.

Cold Stone Creamery. I tried the banana ice cream and nilla wafers. I kept trying to figure out a combo that I couldn't get from Ben & Jerry's that also wouldn't make me nauseous (tried the Birthday Cake with some shit in it last year, shudder). It was tasty, but I realized that I had a gift card that kept going unused. Every year I get a free Like It coupon and that's the only time I ever go, because I'm honestly not that impressed with their ice cream. So I gave the card to the couple behind me. That should make up for all the evil jokes I've made at others' expense this past year.

    Image
Photo's Hot Dogs. For some reason, the freebie is a grilled chicken pita, not a hot dog. But either way this generous freebie came with a pretty sizable bag of the best fries on the planet. Sorry, McD's! You've been usurped!

    Image
Dorfler's Meat Market. I still can't believe this was free. Just for signing up on the website, you get a coupon for a free box of Char Crust, 2 beef filets, and two huge twice-baked potatoes. The meat was great thanks to LTH'ers helping me cook it, and the potatoes were plain but decent. The Char Crust is in my cabinet waiting for a lesser cut of meat.

Most places I signed up with gave me "buy one get one free" coupons: Arby's, The Melting Pot, Dairy Queen and Pita Inn (buy $35 worth of food for $5 off, are you kidding me? Do I have a family of 200?).
And these bastards forgot me completely: Baker's Square, Ben & Jerry's, California Pizza Kitchen, Ghiradelli, Lettuce Entertain You, and Pete Miller's.

I'm afraid to ask, but WTF is a "box of Char Crust"?

To each her own, but I see why people lament birthdays as they get older if the stuff in this thread is what they eat to celebrate.
