It appears that La Tache at 1475 W. Balmoral is no more. The sign is down and the windows are papered over. I live on Balmoral and drive down the street all the time. I noticed it yesterday.

According to yesterday's Dish, "La Tache (1475 W. Balmoral Ave.; 773-334-7168) is in the process of remodeling and introducing 'a more streamlined approach.' It will reopen on April 24th."

Does anyone remember "Jake's Ribs" in that same location in the 70's? Great sauce, no relation to Jake's Pizza.

Empire Szechuan, on Milwaukee just north of Lake on the southwest tip of Northbrook, has closed.
They'd run hot and cold over the past decade: one time I'd go in there and have a terrific lunch, the next I'd go in and get glop.
Their most recent incarnation had a lot of underseasoned, too-sweet Korean items, with Korean and Chinese dishes served in Bento boxes. The culture clash was the smallest of the problems.

A paper sign in the window said "Chinese Restaurant Coming Soon"

That's just east of Washington in the plaza across from Barnes and Noble, I saw a sign a few weeks back but not sure what space they took over in there.

The Mexican place at the corner of Clark/Halsted/Barry (Juliantla?) is closed. Windows are papered over but there are signs up for a wing place (can't remember the name) coming soon.

I saw this a couple weeks ago. Too funny. If they still have the same coconut shrimp that Joe's had, the only reason I had to go there, I'll be happy.

Wow I had always thought that Prosciottini was unique to Blimpie. After going to Jersey Mike's website I see that they also offer Prosciottini as well as my all time favorite Cappacuolo.

The place at 1408 W. Diversey that used to be Sweet Tamarind Thai restaurant now has papered-over windows and a hanging sign that says Fritz Pastry.

The sign is well art-directed.

Here's what I found at Metromix:

Look for classic pastries such as brioches, danishes and croissants, as well as the not-so-common, including bostock and pithiviers. They'll also offer savory selections for lunch and dinner, with an emphasis on seasonal ingredients sourced from local markets and vendors. Expect a light lineup of salads, soups, flatbread pizzas and tartine-style sandwiches.

The last time I was at Joe’s Crab Shack (in Gurnee) it took 45 minutes to get our lunch. We finally told our server just to make it “to go” because we had to get back to work. It wasn’t very good either, the shrimp were like rubber. It was an expensive mistake that I wont make again.

Driving on Howard St in Rogers Park I noticed that Rogers Park Pizzeria

Anybody know when Yak-Zies on Diversey will be re-opening? I'd noticed a new awning a few weeks ago, and now I see on Everyblock that they've been issued Retail food establishment and Tavern licenses... I miss their wings and tang pizza!

Went by the former Sopa this morning, on Sheridan Road in the north part of Highwood, opposite Fort Sheridan. Sopa is GONE. No tables, no chairs, no menu, no drapes, no papering over, no signs and no sign of anything. The nice people at the cleaners next door said they didn't know anything one way or another. Since we live at Fort Sheridan we would welcome a nice restaurant at that location.

A Harry Caray’s Tavern, similar to the one on Sheffield in Wrigleyville, is likely to open on Navy Pier this summer, bringing another Chicago brand to that tourist site.

The sports-themed eatery is expected to move into the former Joe’s Be-Bop space. Previously, a Buffalo Wild Wings had been slated for that spot.

Saw Wally & Agador's Gourmet Cafe while out walking my dog this afternoon. The menu I picked up references Michael's in Winnetka (thread here and here) a number of times. Not sure exactly what the connection is (menu says that the "Gourmet Take-Away" and pastries are from Restaurant Michael) - just reselling some of their stuff or perhaps same or joint ownership?

It's right around the corner, so I'll try a sandwich or two this weekend and report back...

Late reply, but what made me a permanent regular there are their curries, particularly the mussaman curry. I was underwhelmed by the noodle dishes the first one or two times I've tried them, but I've since come around on those. Oh and I love that it's just the husband, wife, and their son running the place.

I'm not sure how to pinpoint it, but I'm picky about my curry and my pad see eiw, and I prefer Pho's to any of the other nearby places I've tried (this includes Penny's, Duck Walk, Azha Thai, Thai Linda, Tamarind (prob. my second favorite), and that new place I initially posted about).

I also love Spoon Thai, Thai Pastry, and Thai Spice in Rogers Park (best non-traditional Thai restaurant run by a German and his Thai wife in the city!), but those aren't close enough to visit regularly.

Up on N Lincoln Ave, fdm has opened as of tonight. I drove by and almost missed it since the front is very minimalistic. Brick with "fdm" on a teak-backed sign. This is the new sister restaurant of Fonda del Mar in W Logan Square/Humboldt Park neighborhood mentioned here

Similar menu with the house specialty Cochinita Pibil, but the Tikin Xic isn't on the menu at the new place, maybe as a rotating special? Great interior in clean, cream and tan tones.

It's currently BYOB while they wait on the license, so bring your bottles while you can...

Kuhn's German Delicatessen, which had been in Deerbrook Mall since the days of Turn Style is closed.

I've been walking by the NW corner of LaSalle St. and Grand Ave. where some construction has been underway, on my way to Ohio House Restaurant, and I noticed a sign advertising the soon-t0-open Fresco Express Café.



The sign announcing the opening points-out that the following will be available: espresso and other specialty coffees, fresh squeezed juices, sandwiches, salads and desserts . . . among other things. There’ll be drive-thru service. After looking at the website I have the impression that this is the first of several or more such restaurants. The start of another food empire!

The Tribune today noted that the space used for the former tequila bar just north of Wellington on Lincoln is opening on Monday as Los Moles.

I walked by Sweet Thang on Roscoe and the store hours were not on the door, plus there was an ad posted for an office supply sale, with xeroxes and desks and dividers and stuff all piled in the front of the store, first thing you see looking into the window. So that might mean it's defunct?
