Don Alfredo Carnitas' small shack at 25th Ave. and Lake St. is closed down for food sales on Mondays now, but their store in the adjacent strip mall is still going strong every day.

There are signs up in the storefront just north of Latin Sandwich Cafe (or whatever they are calling it these days) on Elston & Irving. Either Brasa Roja or El Llano is going in there. Both names are on the signs, so maybe the El Llano folks are going to put in a hybrid version of both of their restaurants.

Adding to the chicken variations along Montrose, Sabroso Grill opened a few weeks ago. This one is Mexican, featuring pollo al carbon in whole, half and quarter chicken portions. They also have a range of other Mexican dishes.

I had lunch there on Friday. Two tacos, one asada and one pollo asado, plus horchata really aren't enough to start a new thread but are enough to know I will be back with my wife. Tortillas hechas a mano went well with the chopped, lightly charred meats. The horchata is fairly heavy on the cinnamon.

There is a big BYOB sign in the window. The interior is way above the pattern in nearby taquerias with tablecloths topped with butcher paper. They have a DJ several evenings a week.

The owner had Rosa Latin Catering previously, which has been renamed Sabroso Catering. The web site only has coming soon.

For those that have expressed liking this place, there is a new Chipotle Grill on North Ave. in Melrose Park. North side of North, next to the TCF Bank.

Crocodile, the restaurant/bar at 1540 N. Milwaukee in Wicker Park already seems to be kaput. Newspapers stacked on the doorstep, torn upholstery on window benches, interior generally falling apart.

Skokie Pita & Pizza at the infamous corner of Skokie/Lincoln/Howard has closed. To be replaced by the creatively named Coffee Beanery. I'm taking bets on this one.

Just a clarification to the El Paisano's closing, because I am a fan of their delivery and the website, they are still delivering to the same area from the second location.

The sign on the in-construction coffee/art/pastry shop, “Espresso thy Art”, on Damen just north of Irving says they'll be opening tomorrow. Doing a little googling, it appears they’ll have crepes, waffles and Philipino baked goods. There used to be a Philipino bakery at the location, but it seemed more like a supplier of other places than a retail place.

After reading that, I'm very glad I never went there. It would explain some things, wouldn't it?

Before a Bulls playoff game a couple of weeks ago, I found myself wanting some version of southern or Cajun food. My friend and I peered in Yats . . . saw no one except an employee reading at the counter . . . and went to Wishbone. All that I can say is Yats might have been bad (I don't know, I never ate there), but it could not have been any worse than Wishbone. Still wondering why I didn't just go to one of my more standard west side soul joints . . . always sure to please.

Brother's Ribs in Lake Zurich is under new management. Hopefully the new regime will elicit a better response than this:

I agree. I like to attend a lot of the local community summer fests. A week ago I was at one and tried Brothers’ Ribs. I got some tips and a rib sandwich. They were both so bad we threw them away. There is a Cuban sandwich shop that has opened literally right next door to Habana Libre called El Mariel. I noticed it driving by today and, based on an internet search, it appears to have been open just over a month. At first I thought surely it must have been opened by the Habana Libre folks as a complimentary quick service/takeaway place, but the businesses appear to be unrelated. Perhaps Chicago Ave. between Noble and Ashland is destined to become to Cuban food what that stretch N. Kedzie is to Middle Eastern.

I was wondering that, and I, too, assumed it was a fast food outpost for Habana Libre. I haven't tried them yet, but will have to get over there.

In one incarnation, it was "Lary's Island Donuts"

Prior to that it was indeed, a Dunkin Donuts.

It was originally built as Amy Joy Donuts (back in the late 50's) and I wish it was still Amy Joy Donuts.
