French Cakes Patisserie

I was going to Binny's and noticed a big sign in the adjacent strip mall that said: French Cakes. Why wouldn't I stop?

The bakery is in Plainfield off Rte 59 on the east side of the road, near the Binny's. It is next to Nick's Cozy Corner, which parenthetically seemed to be doing a land-office breakfast business on a Saturday morning.

But back to French Cakes. It's a lovely bakery with lots of croissants, including ham and cheese, pan au chocolat, and other pastries, like palmiers, crinkled chocolate cookies, ginger snaps, butter cookies with chocolate chips. Also traditional French cakes, and cupcakes (I had a chocolate/chocolate one that was super -- cake was very moist and the frosting was a nice chocolate flavor).

The bakers are heavy duty and onsite, and seem very nice.

Also, the ham and cheese croissant was delicious. Glad to see there's something like this out in the burbs, and I hope people support it.

Thanks for sharing that. I've been back numerous times since the first post, and have never been disappointed. Well, unless they were out of things I wanted, but what can you do?

The croissants are always perfect. It's best to order in advance, because they are often sold out. I've also had their lemon pound cake, which is dense and very tasty with a nice glaze on top.

I'd say that this is worth a ride. Try it out even if you're not in the area.

I can't tell you how happy I am to find out about this place! Naperville has NO good bakeries and that always amazes me. I'll stop by this place on the weekend.

I forgot to mention the quiche. It's very very good. The crust is tender, flaky, and flavorful. I've had the quiche Lorraine, a tomato and spinach (I think), and maybe a tomato. All were outstanding. They're probably a little bit bigger than the individual frozen ones and were fine to share for a light lunch, but you could easily eat the whole thing. I noticed they listed a pear and proscuitto quiche, which sounded quite interesting.
