A new restaurant featuring Indonesian food is getting ready to open for business in the space where most recently a Filipino restaurant (and before that a Thai) failed - on the SE corner of Touhy & California . . . adjacent to the 7-11.

I assume this is the space that Tapsilog At Iba Pa occupied, and before that Thai One(?), and before that Sala Thai (for many years). I hope they do better than their predecessors. It will be nice to have an Indonesian restaurant in the area (or in Chicago for that matter).

Dixie Kitchen in Hyde Park closing June 7th. They are being pushed out of their complex by the developers -- hopefully they find a good place to re-locate to very soon!

There is a Beggars Pizza sign on a storefront on Clinton/Jackson next to the Potbelly's. There used to be a Beggars Pizza on Kelsey/Rt 59 in Barrington when I was growing up. Is this related to the current chain?

I doubt it. Beggars is a southside & south suburbs chain.

The Ms. sent an email I think from dailycandy about a newer BBQ place called Tailgate (lame name) off Clybourn. They're having all you can eat ribs for $24.95 through Saturday. I have never been, nor do I plan to cause of that name. I looked it up and it says they do ribs, chicken slow cooked via Rotisserie. I don't know, I'll stick with Honey1 but just throwing it out there if anyone is interested.

Granted, I have not been there in a few years but I did visit Calypso Cafe occasionally for a number of years after it first opened, and it never really came close to measuring up to Dixie Kitchen or struck me as anything worth traveling for. Adding some of Dixie Kitchen's menu selections may help though.

Meanwhile, I would also love input from anyone who has been to the Evanston or Lansing locations. Dixie Kitchen was by far my wife's favorite when we lived in Hyde Park, and one of very few few reasons we ever return to the area these days. I dread telling her about this

I have been to the one in Evanston and and Hyde Park...the only difference between the two places for me was it was easier to park at the one in Evanston. Johnny cakes with butter taste just as yummy up North as they do on the Southside :D

I've been to both as well, although not to the Hyde Park one in a number of years. I think that the Evanston branch is on the same level. I wouldn't claim that it's the best for Cajun, but it's good for downtown Evanston :) They do good business there and have a super-cheap lunch specials menu.

I've been to the Evanston location many times and its actually really good, I'd say the same quality as Hyde Park. We live equal distance from both the Evanston and Hyde Park locations, but prefer Hyde Park for the easy parking and the atmosphere. Evanston, however, has a larger menu that includes a great fried chicken special on Sundays, and my favorite, the seafood cakes (made with crawfish, crab, and shrimp). The Johnny Cakes and butter are just as good as Hyde Park (the important part!).

Heads up: Terzo Piano was not accepting walk-ins last night; a sign on the door alluded to a desire to calibrate kitchen and service performance before fully implementing dinner service. Admirable, though a bummer: the space is beautiful, and the outdoor seating is, in a word, choice. I'd guess that the rez-only policy will apply for the next Thursday or two, so you'd better call ahead....

Cafe Marianao is currently under construction - the windows are boarded up and they've stripped off the building's facade and are replacing it with a new brick one. All the signs are still in place, but it looks like they are closed for the next week or two.

Driving by this weekend, noticed a new place going into the space most recently occupied by Bahia on Lincoln. Restaurant name is Brown Trout. It didn't look like they were open yet and I didn't see a menu posted on the window. Website isn't up and running yet either.

Edited to note (5/29/2009): drove by last night and it looks like they are open. Saw what looked like menus posted in the window and diners/waitstaff inside. Website is still under construction so no real info there.

Sadly, Mi Rinconcito appears to have closed. Lights were off last night, and furniture was strewn about inside. It was a warm, family-run place that always had fresh flowers on the table and good, humble fare. The family invested in a fancy new sign and awning a few months back, and were giving it their all, it seemed.

I still lament the version #1 of Darwins - had big hopes for that before it went through that initial closing. Opened up a completely different place.

Chinaski's had a great name, and not much else. Good luck to 6 Degrees.

Mi Rincocito has been closed for several months. We had lunch there once and thought the food was average quality at higher than average prices albeit in nicer than average surroundings than a whole bunch of Mexican restaurants in Albany Park, Irving Park and Lincoln Square.

Fritz Pastry, 1408 W. Diversey is now open. I tasted some samples yesterday on my way home from work. I don't know exactly what they call what I had but one pastry had pear with very flaky crust and the other was a popover type thing with raspberry jam. Very flaky, light and I'm sure it was all made with lots of real butter.
Menu including salads, soup, etc. will be on their website.
