You know, the metal rice bowl, with a matching metal lid, that is a staple at every Korean restaurant in the world?

My friends and I haven't been able to find them at H-Mart, Mitsuwa, Asian Food Mart in Schaumburg (another Korean grocery - corner of Roselle & Golf), or Tentsuke market. They are taking on the aura of a magical gift that is only available to the exclusive club of Korean restaurant owners!

    HI,

Did you try Chicago Food on Kimball? They have a housewares sections with goods leaning toward Korean households.

    Jon,

Did you check out the new kitchen ware small appliance section of H-mart? It was new as of a few weeks ago. Just to the right of the grocery entrance, which would be due North of the food kiosk area.

    Enjoy,

I was at H-Mart this evening, none there!

And my friend couldn't find any on Kimball, either.

I swear, I'll just have to get them in Korea! :o

I found a stack of the bowls, but no lids... You might ask the lady if the lids are available. We often venture here after our visits to Mitsuwa to purchase their homemade soups to which we add tofu. All they had was pollack soup today (blech...); We usually get the beef soup or the yukejang.

i just want to know why. the metal rice bowl is about one of the stupidest ideas to ever come out of Korea. makes zilch sense. authenticity be damned.

It's a historical relic - the ruler of korea insisted that his chopsticks and serving ware would be metal, so they couldn't have poison soaked into them (as well as for hygenic reasons). it stuck.

plus, they're used to keep the rice warm - many restaurants apparently put the rice into the bowls and then keep them in a warmer, rather than spoon it directly from the rice cooker into the bowl.

In China, the 'iron rice bowl' has more than culinary importance, let me tell you!

Would I be able to find the stone bowls (& wooden plates) used to make dolsot bibimbap here? I've been trying to find them for a while (without ordering online - shopping for them is half the fun!) & am constrained to places the CTA will get me. This looks like a worthwhile trip regardless, but I'd hate to go, thinking I was going to find what I wanted, only to be disappointed. Thanks!

HMart is a long haul by public transportation, but I'm pretty sure I've seen the stone bowls at the rear of the housewares store - they aren't cheap, otherwise I'd have bought one.

You might have an easier time getting to Chicago Food Corp on Pulaski which is now entirely housewares. It's across the street from the entrance to the Nature Center near Peterson - drive all the way to the back of the parking lot. I don't know if they have them, but they might be able to tell you over the phone.

    Thanks!

Chicago Food Corp. is on my list of places to check out as well - glad to know it's a good possibility. Was thinking I'd do Chicago Food Corp./Joong Boo Market on N. Kimball (are they the same place?), Hi Mart/Chicago Food Corp. on N. Pulaski (again, same thing? If not, why are they sharing names), Viet Hoa Plaza Inc & Mien-Hoa Market on Argyle. It'd make for a fun day questing around the city & checking out stores I've never been to before. Ending the day w/a trip to Patel Bros. to get some indian mangos. I'm actually quite excited to do this. I hate to shop for clothes, but can shop for foodstuffs and kitchen goods all day. Any other suggestions on places to check out, bowl buying recommendations?
