I found the requirement that you "must be present in store or drive thru to receive your beef" somewhat amusing.

There are a lot of schnorrers out there. I can just picture someone wanting to take an armload of $1 beefs back to the office for his or her co-workers.

Like any business that's part of a franchise, not all locations may serve food of an equal quality - and that's been my experience with Al's. Some sandwiches aren't even worth spending $1. It might be an excuse for some folks to drive rover to Taylor Street for a sandwich, after which to walk across the street to Mario's for an ice.

Something tells me that they won't be participating in this promotion.

If you are referring to the Taylor St location, I think you are mistaken. Al's on Taylor St. has had several posters encouraging people to vote for this 'Golden Local' people's choice award.

I saw the clip where the owner was presented the award on TV and he mentioned that all of the locations would be participating.

Thank You. I did finally call my local Al's which is a franchisee and they said they are participating.

Knowing next to nothing about Al's, this list of locations is problematic:

Does "Coming Soon" mean the phone info is coming soon, or that the location itself doesn't exist yet?

I would take it to mean that the location is coming soon.

Often a place will have phone service by the time they open.

    Map

There were a few locations that came up on Google Maps that were not listed on Al's website. I placed an asterisk (*) in front of the location name and used a red marker.

I knew that the location on River Road in Franklin Park had closed so it was not listed.

Walking around looking for something new at lunch today I literally stumbled upon the Al's Beef location at the SE corner of Ontario & Wells St. The outdoor seating area, covered by umbrellas, was particularly inviting in the afternoon Sun.

    Image

I ordered a beef/sausage combo, the price of which was about $6.75 (with sweet peppers). The beef was okay, the sausage was greasy/watery . . . seemingly not well-cooked . . . and the roll was soft with the consistency of the bread used by Subway Sandwich. The sausage had the ever so slight hint of fennel but gthe grease/moisture overwhelmed it. The soft roll was a letdown and didn't support the beef/sausage very well.

Comparing Mr. Beef - which is less than a 10-minute walk from this particular Al's Beef and a place I've eaten at many times - to Al's at Ontario & Wells, I strongly prefer the sandwiches offered by Mr. Beef. For a $1, though, I'd order the "regular" beef sandwich at this location.

I rocked the Niles one (Touhy), and it was pretty tasty. A full 6" for $1.11. Though it may have been a little skimpier on the beef than it may have been had I paid full price, it was a nice lunch and the bread was not too soggy.

Went to Taylor St. home of the ONLY Al's (accept no substitutes) but the line was out the door and around the bldg with quite a wait. Easy to fix. Extra lg Tutti Frutti from Mario's w/a short walk to Fontano's.

haha, jazzfood, I was in line at that time and saw you walk into the lot, look at the line and then head straight back out.

I had a little more patience and was rewarded with a damn fine (and damn cheap) beef.

I did the same. I thought 4pm would be a good off-hour to go, but the line was around the building. IMO, the wait in the hot sun wasn't worth it to save $4, so I went to Pompeii. Probably did me good to eat a salad anyway. Mela Verde. Mmm...

The wait at Taylor St at 7:00 pm was 1:15 (Mmmm, Mario's while waiting). No line at Ontario or Countryside locations.

The beef's all had the same seasoning and a very similar flavor. The beef at Countryside was a bit tough and Taylor and Ontario were both pretty well shredded. The sandwiches were pretty well filled against the norm.

All in all a nice Italian Beef dinner crawl with The Bride on a great early summer evening!

Same here. I hit Taylor Street around 4:30 p.m., after picking up a pork belly at Peoria Packing. Drove by, saw the line, said screw that, and went home. I'd make a bad Brit, as I simply detest queuing.

I had ridden my bike there from River North, so at that point I figured what the hell. Worth it to save $4, maybe not, but I don't get there often enough anyway, it was a nice day, and there were some nice folks in line with me. :)
