Over the Christmas holidays, I visited a friend who offered me an Ethel M Dark Chocolate bar. They went on to explain how it was founded by a Mars Chocolate Factory heir who wanted to make fine chocolates in his retirement. I found an article which reflects this information.
From Ethel M's website they offer a factory tour, which sounds wonderful, as well as a Cactus Garden.

Post #2 - January 28th, 2005, 9:56 pmMom used to bring back boxes of Ethel M chocolates from her visits to Las Vegas. WOW! They had a cart for awhile at the shopping center on Michigan Avenue anchored by Saks.

Post #3 - January 28th, 2005, 10:51 pmMarly Chocolates in Evanston is affilliated with Ethel M Chocolates. My wife just charged a party there for a friend and it showed up on the credit card as Ethel M.

Post #4 - January 29th, 2005, 1:53 amThey also used to sell, though no longer, Ethel M chocolates at the Virgin record store on Michigan Ave. That fact (perhaps unjustifiably) made me suspect of the operation. I just now think that maybe I had some of these over Christmas, and was unimpressed...which is to say, I find most such chocolates pretty good and these were no different. Not bad, but not exceptional.

Post #5 - January 29th, 2005, 7:22 amI have spent many hours in the Ethel M's cactus garden in Henderson, NV. It has perhaps one of the best cactus gardens in the US and draws a great number of desert birds around the oasis. If you want to really enjoy the garden (and see critters) you need to arrive around 6 am before the bus loads of people arrive.
The choclolates are pretty good and for $18 are pretty reasonable, but out of my price range.

Post #6 - March 5th, 2005, 1:42 pmI was on Davis St. in Evanston yesterday, and noted that Marly Chocolates' windows were covered with brown paper. I was chagrined, until I noticed a sign in the window announcing, "COMING SOON: Ethel's Chocolate Lounge." Hmmmm. Interesting possibilities....

I would still be chagrined. The loss of Marly Chocolates is huge. I mean, Ethyl M's is OK, but Marly's was exquisite.Steve Z.

I concur. Marly's selection was fantastic, especially their exotic, homemade savory-flavored truffles. Their sugar free section was a favorite of the diabetic wing of my family.

Post #9 - March 8th, 2005, 10:40 amEvery time I'm at the airport in Reno I need to get my Ethel M fix with a dark chocolate cluster with almonds or hazlenuts. IMO you should stay away from the truffles which I feel are very ordinary and stick with their pure chocolate.
