Help - up north

Standing at the DMV up on elston. It's like 5500 north. Going back to northcenter after I'm done.

Gonna need a good meal after this miserable experience. Where should I go? Not picky. Keep it under $20

Take Elston southest for about 2 miles, then make a right on Pulaski. Smoque will be on your right, just after you pass under the expressway.

Second Smak-Tac for great Polish. I also would recommend Tazitaro for Mexican where Milwaukee and Elston meet--good margaritas, tacos and burritos. Don't bother with the seafood or daily specials. I haven't been too impressed with these in the past.

My handy-dandy personal food map tell me that the LTH-mentioned places (that I've pushpinned) closest to where you are are:

King 2 Gyros, 0.5 miles, 5233 N. Milwaukee
Marie's Pizza, 1.7 miles, 4127 W. Lawrence
Superdawg, 1.9 miles, 6363 N. Milwaukee, but that's headed farther north
Latin Sandwich Cafe, 2.6 miles, 4009 N. Elston
Smoque, 2.7 miles, 3800 N. Pulaski

I guess I don't have a pushpin for Smak-Tak.

That King 2 Gyros is an amazing gyros joint. And they play great music.
Marie's Pizza is great for late pizza, beer, and live jazz.
The Latin Sandwich Cafe closed, and is now called, hmm, something, I forget (my other posts on other threads are the helpful ones).
Smak-tak good, too.
I would also recommend Sabatino's over on Irving Park, a little east of Cicero. Great Italian food.
You weren't far from Gale Street Inn. A little pricier, but I've always enjoyed it.
I've always thought Superdawg was overrated. There's a little hotdog shack over on Lawrence, a little east of Elston, oh man, I can't think of the name of that either. It's on the south side of Lawrence, about two blocks east of the overpass. Great hotdogs.
And for a nice little taco joint you can sit outside on a porch for some al pastor and funky art is El Potosi over on the 3700 block of N. Elston. Picture!



I know none of this helps the OP, but we just moved out of the neighborhood, so I'm feeling mighty nostalgic for some of my foodie haunts.

Latin Sandwich Cafe did not close but changed its name to Rapa Nui under the same owners and with small menu changes.

You scared me for a minute - I was just there a couple of weeks ago, and looking forward to going back. I just couldn't remember which was the old name and which was the new name.
