I'm looking to scratch my corny itch after pupusas and atole de elote not long ago. Who knows of some tasty dishes that prominently feature corn? Any area or price point is fine, but it must be something I can get on its own, not a dish that is part of a prix fixe, for example.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

You might begin your list by simply doing a search for elote and pupusa, I usually drop the plurals.

I meant I was looking for things other than those two dishes, but I can always do with more elote. 8)

I am always on the lookout for a restaurant that serves a good baked corn souffle.

I can eat that stuff by the pound. :)

I love the corn pudding at Feed - pure comfort food.

A couple weeks ago I posted on Garifuna Flava. As I mentioned in that thread, the ducunu—a steamed packet of grated fresh corn with coconut milk and spices—was one of the highlights of a very good meal. It will probably only get better when local corn becomes available. Here's another picture.

    That does look good!
I wonder how long a drive it will be from 18th & Ashland - La Cebollita has a corn-based hot chocolate. I might be making a south-side corn-based day trip. :)

Champurrado, right? If you want to do a head-to-head, Chicago Mex Grill at 18th and Damen also has it, along with decent handmade tortillas. Taqueria Casa del Pueblo at roughly 18th and Blue Island also has champurrado.

If you go to La Cebollita (there are probably hundreds of other sources for champurrado) be sure to check out the corn mural only a few blocks away, on the corner of Cullerton (20th St) & Blue Island. It's a spectacular new piece of public art, I think commissioned by El Milagro. Pilsen (and the rest of the city) has some great murals and this ranks with the best of them. It wasn't quite finished when I took this picture a few months ago but I think it's complete now. Worth a special trip.

If you want to try a more challenging corn-based beverage, may I suggest a glass of tejuino? Fermented masa might be an acquired taste but I like the version at Birrieria La Barca on Cermak in La Villita.
