If I get there Saturday night and it's closed, what's a good second bet in the area that isn't Klas?

I've found if you call first and they DON'T answer, they are closed. That being said, also close by are a couple of GNR's:

I think about 8, so Freddy's is out, however, I'll be back at some point for the gelato. Maybe it's good they'll be closed by then. :)

Bodhi Thai at 6211 W Roosevelt is a very good restaurant, especially if you consult the specials board at the front of the house. They're open until 9:00 M-Th & Su and until 10:00 F and Sa.

Juan, all i have to say to you is, "really.........really, are you @#%&!*% serious?".

as much as i like an honest to goodness old school diner, i have never been to The Depot American Diner. i would love to especially after all the good things that have been said about the food. however, i don't ever plan to go because they are out of my way and i can't be assured that they will be open.

as for people who have gone only to find TDAD closed during their "theoretical" hours, it is their every right to complain because they have been inconvenienced and disappointed.

and to those that defend TDAD's business practices, it is your right as well. but you know what...SAVE IT, i don't care. to those that continue to be loyal customers and not concerned about them being closed when they're supposed to be open, TDAD is very lucky to have great customers such as yourselves.

if the reason they keep sporadic hours because they don't need the business, good for them...for now. but was it not too long ago they needed a fundraiser?? i mean, WTF. if they have other "valid" reasons for the unscheduled closings, then i retract my comment. otherwise, i don't plan on going to the next fundraiser either.

what i was trying to get across was dripping with sarcasm. how that was misunderstood is beyond me. anyway, i give this place another year (at best) if they continue this nonsense. that's a shame because it seems from the posts here that the food is very good. the quality of the food will not overcome their mistreatment of customers.

    But seriously...

I had the tomato soup the other day and it was awesome (I Love Soup)! Creamy, thick and a nice tomato flavor. The small roll on the side was a nice touch as well.

Sometimes I prefer good old oyster crackers though... :)

Can we get back to the food?

It's a diner, call first and make sure they answer, is the take away IMHO.

I appreciate those of you who went, and discovered that their hours aren't always as posted, alerting the rest of the community.

Does anything else about this need to be said?

Now can we get back to what unites us? (Man I hope I duck before I get punched for being the girl in the middle  ).

i would have if i knew they'd be open, but that's a gamble i'm not willing to risk the finite amount of free time i have. if others have time to kill, great. and if this place succeeds, good for them but i doubt it if they keep it up. also, closing early because you're slow isn't being eccentric, it's being lazy and inconsiderate of your customers. there are thousands of places in this town that stay open to closing time despite being slow. do you not think they want to leave when it's slow? they don't because they respect and value their customers.

I just call before I go and then i know whether to make the drive.

I've had the pot roast sammich 4 times and its been immaculate twice. . and alittle dry in some parts the last two times (but still a great meal)

Does anybody know why this is? Is there a best time to go to eat it straight after it's cooked?

I went yesterday and had the rib special - the ribs were way too fatty but the chicken soup that came with was superb - full of dark meat and lots of herbs. Sadly I didn't have room for the egg cream but on the way home I realized the blue line is less than a mile away! Finally, an easy way to get here.

Even though I am in the area I have not stopped at the taqueria as of yet but one day chatting with the beautiful and gracious Annemarie she mentioned that often they will swap meals with the owner there.

While it is a shame that some have visited when The Depot is not open there are a couple of awesome alternatives within a mile...

The GNR and Chicago favorite Freddy's Pizza and ...
