I was driving down Taylor Street earlier this week and I noticed what appeared to be a new breakfast/lunch place where El Taco used to be. Since I love a good breakfast, I actually went in yesterday and found the food to be quite fresh and tasty and very reasonably priced. Problem is, I can't remember it's name. I was going to write a glowing review of how wonderful the fresh Hash Browns are and what a great Bacon Chicken Sandwich they make. The atmosphere is nice as well; it's not that large, but its on two levels. You can sit in a loft-type space and look down on the cook preparing your meal which was interesting and comforting as you saw the ingredients were fresh and not canned. My co-worker had the Bacon, chicken and cheese sandwich on a very fresh bun and I had a Cheddar, Bacon and Spinach Omelette with Hash Browns and Toast. I asked the waiter how long they'd been open and he said 6 months.

Back to the name. It starts with an "I" I think, and its Italian or sounds Italian. I tried googling it but couldn't find it in the maps or directory section. I tried a search here and couldn't find mention of it either. I think it's at 1412 W. Taylor as that was El Taco's former address. I wanted to review it while it was fresh in my mind. I'll visit again soon and try to snag a menu and a name.

    Little help?

I found the place on Monday, ate there on Tuesday, made a post here on Wednesday and today, Thursday, went back to eat and was greeted with a sign that announced it has closed down. I thought the recession was over. Very disappointing. Since the wait at Sweet Maple Cafe was twenty minutes, we ended up at Bar Louie for 1/2 price appetizer Thursday. Good Bye Irlandese, we hardly knew ye......

    Radiator,

Next time the wait seems too long at Sweet Maple (as it often is for us), try here, also on Taylor St, practically across from Al's:

    Demitasse Cafe
    1066 W. Taylor St.
    Chicago, IL 60607 312-226-7666

Nothing super special, but a decent fresh breakfast (nice selection of frittatas) at a reasonable price in a pleasant cafe/gallery atmosphere.
