    Hi,

Two events of interest will be occurring at the Hobby, Arts and Crafts Building, which has air conditioning (important on a hot, muggy Springfield summer day):

    1. Noon - I will be preparing Edgar Rose's Pecan Pie for the Blue Ribbon Pie Competition. If you enjoy watching someone bake a pie, this may be of interest to you. The results of the competition will be announced around 5 or 5:30 PM.

    2. Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance is sponsoring a competition:

    Hi,

Yeah, it is buried in the pdf premium book that is not indexed for search engines.

I meant to put this up much earlier. Sorry for being tardy.

    Hi,

There is still time to get your entries in and postmarked today.

    I entered:

    August 15th:
    - Blue Ribbon Pie contest
    - Pizza Party (I'm there and have access to an oven, why not.)

    August 22nd:
    - Meatloaf
I will be there if I need to return for the Blue Ribbon finalists.

I hope to get some pictures of the meatloaf competition whether I make it there or not. I'm just dying of curiosity.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Hi,

If you are attending the Illinois State Fair on Saturday, look for us at the Hobby, Arts and Craft's building not too far from the Dairy building with the butter cow.

At 10 AM, we'll be judging the Greater Midwest Foodways Alliance's Heirloom recipe competition focusing on dishes suitable for potluck, community dinners and church suppers circa 1950 or earlier.

At noon, winners for the heirloom recipe will be announced.

I will then begin preparing my entry in the Blue Ribbon pie competition with winners announced around 4:45 PM.

    Regards,
    Cathy2

    Hi Cathy,

I was at my parents' house last week and brought home a copy of the "Washburn County Homemakers' Cook Book", dated 1950. I'll share it with you the next time we're at an event. Best of luck to you this weekend.

I had the privilege of judging the Heirloom Recipes competition at the State Fair. I was truly impressed by the quality of nearly all the entries as well as by the stories that accompanied them. Here are photos of some of the dishes.

First Place — Kluski (potato dumplings)
    Image

Second Place — Potica (filled with black walnuts)

    Third Place — Yeast Donuts
