hi all: Myhusband turns 40 next week and has requested a cake that has lady fingers on it/in it and chocolate mousse. Does such a thing exist? I mean I know it does as tiramisu (sort of) but is there a cake like this? I used to work at a french bakery in Colorado, we had a cake that was lady fingers on the outside and fruit and lemon cream on the inside, but not chocolate.

I think I recall seeing something at BomBon with lady fingers . . . but maybe I'm thinking of the lady finger cake I saw at Bobak's last month. Can you tell I am all over the place on this one?

If you have any suggestions, this girl could use a little direction.

    thanks in advance!

Isn't that just a straight chocolate charlotte?

Dunno where to find one, of course, but it should give you some guidance.

If you want to make your own, and it doesn't look too difficult, you can find recipes online or in the Fannie Farmer cookbook.

That's what we called it, yes a Charlotte. Thank you! (merci!) So maybe I can call Vanille and see if they can make one.

If anyone has any suggestions for bakeries that know their French pastries let me know.

    Hi,

I have posted elsewhere a Jell-O based desert where the springform was lined with Lady Fingers called Broken Glass Torte.

If you are not intimidated about making Chocolate Mousse, you could easily line a springform with lady fingers and fill it with mousse. Otherwise if you know someplace who makes a good mousse, then bring them your springform and lady fingers for them to fill.

    Happy Birthday to your husband!

What is a good place to buy lady fingers? I used to get them from Cost Plus World Market but it is not a convinient place for me to go all the time. Any places downtown or up in Andersonville/Lincoln Square I can get them at?

    Hi,

Jewel and Dominick's always have them. They only run into short supply around major holidays. In a pinch, I once made them myself. I found I prefer buying them.

Hear hear. Making them is a pain in the ass; I could never fully incorporate the whites into the stiff yolks without chewy bits or deflating the whole thing. The pre-baked ones (look in the bakery section) are quite tasty and not too sweet.

The brand I always saw was SBI, and you can find some tasty-sounding charlotte recipes on their website.

    Hi,

SBI corners the market on grocery store lady fingers. I have never seen any other vendor.
