Please help me settle a bet.
I hate watermelon, and I bought Pie Dude a yellow one at the Skokie Farmer's Market just to see if he'd like it. I had a piece, and I swear it tasted different. I thought it was sweeter and a little like honey. He says I'm nuts, it tastes exactly the same.

    Am I truly nuts?

I feel there's a fair degree of variation in taste even among melons of the same color. I cut into a red watermelon this morning that had very little taste, but like many here, I've also had red melons that were full of flavor.

I think taste varies based on lots of factors; color is an obvious difference but may not be related to differences in taste.

The yellow watermelons I have had all have a distinctive flavor with honey overtones that is different from any red watermelon I have ever tasted. Under-ripe watermelons of any color have flavor deficiencies. Yellow watermelons tend to have relatively fragile skins and so are more likely to be in farmers' markets where most fruit is picked riper than for shipping and going through supermarket warehouses.

    Pie lady,

I've noticed a subtle difference in flavor as well. I think many would agree that Ranier cherries have a slightly different flavor profile than the bings.

And I've also noticed that yellow bell peppers have a different taste than the green or red. A bit like like corn to me.

    Can we taste colors?

I wish I could taste corn in bell peppers, maybe that would make me like them.

I'm with you there. Yellow peppers are softer, more tender, and sweeter than green.
