Post #1 - July 22nd, 2009, 3:41 pmMy friend Penelope Bingham is the Newberry volunteer who prices the cookbooks:In the spirit of "Better Late Than Never", here is the scoop on this year's Annual Book Fair at Newberry Library which begins -- TODAY! There are the usual thousands of books on every imaginable subject plus CDs, LPs, videos, and DVDs.
But what you really want to know about is this year's cookbook selection: I'm pleased to be able to report that there has never been such a large number of cookbooks as this year! Charlie Trotter, Irma Rombauer, M.F.K. Fisher, Larousse Gastronomique -- they're all there. And enough unusual titles (e.g., Jewish cooking in South Africa) to keep things interesting.
The Associates' Preview, from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Wednesday is for those who have anted up $100 to become Associates of the Library. Yes, you can become an Associate on the spot and shop the Preview for First Pick of the books. And, yes, it's worth it if you are a dedicated collector or biblioholic: just ask the dealers and patrons who line up before 4:00 pm to be the very first. (Some say the thrill of participating in the first mad rush to the book tables is worth the price all by itself.)
There will be lots left, however, when the Book Fair proper begins on Thursday. Here's the schedule:
Thursday, July 23, 2009, from 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Friday, July 24, 2009, from 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Saturday, July 25, 2009, from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Sunday, July 26, 2009, from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Admission is free. On Sunday, whatever is left is half-price.

I wanted to attend this and had it on my calendar from last year, but was in Kansas City last weekend. Did you go? If so, how was it and what did you get?

I'm ashamed to report I did not go. I am at cookbook saturation at the moment.
When I could go, I decided to get lunch instead.

Post #5 - July 27th, 2009, 10:37 pmI was originally planning on going Friday after work, and Sunday to catch the 50% off sale...but had to miss both after I came into Cubs tickets for both of those days. Unfortunately, I am critically short on cookbooks (all I have are a bunch of recipes printed off the web, CIA's "Professional Chef" 8th ed., and of course "Low & Slow"), so I was really looking forward to it.
Oh well, next year hopefully. In the meantime, I'd love to hear about it from anyone who might have stopped by.

Post #6 - July 28th, 2009, 6:54 amYou might want to check out the Oak Park Library sale coming up then. It's August 7th and 8th, 2009. I haven't been to it myself either, but thought I'd mention it. If you go on Saturday, you can also go to the OP Farmers market.

Post #7 - August 3rd, 2009, 12:09 pmI was also bummed I missed the book sale, but moving in a week ahead of everyone won out. I saw Penelope Bingham give a lecture at the Bezazian library a month or two ago on "What Would Lincoln Eat" and the Newberry sale came up (not least of all because one of the co-chairs was there and passing out bookmarks). She essentially brought her bibliography for the lecture with her and invited the audience to browse and browse I did. I was equally fascinated by the Lincoln material as the cookbooks. In my ongoing attempt at pretending to be an adult, I'm just starting to fill my kitchen with things other than a George Foreman grill, microwave, and other college staples and could have used some cookbooks, but the good news is it's garage sale season!"People sometimes attribute quotes to the wrong person"--Mark Twain
