coconut ice cream -- any store or brand suggestions?

Can anyone recommend where we can find coconut ice cream?

I see that Hagen Daaz has a coconut mango ice cream but we want to pour Kahlua over it so I don't think the mango would...er.. go.

And Fresh Farms has a Filipino frozen desert that they insist is coconut ice cream even though the ingredients do not list anything like milk or cream (but about twenty chemicals - yum?).

I also have seen in the past coconut sherbert. But the real ice cream would be best. We want it for a romantic anniversary dinner -- remembering a trip to Mexico where we first tasted the combination. Any help would be appreciated.

I wish I had time and an ice cream maker but this week I only have time to fly into a store. We are near Niles, Skokie, Evanston but I am willing to travel. Thank you all for your help.

Almost certain I've seen it in the freezer at Patel Brothers on Devon.

I'm sure this will bee too far to go for you, and the product is not full of milk fat, so if you are looking for haagen daz or ben&jerry smooth, this stuff will not be for you. If, by any chance, you are looking for Mexican Ice Cream - the stuff that's kinda icy until you let it "warm" up a bit to let the ice crystals melt, I have never had a better coconut ice cream than the "coco cremoso" at Flamingo's Paleteria in Berwyn. They also offer a coco rostizado with flake coconut in it, but the cremoso style (which has no coconut meat in it) is one of those things that I push on ppl. It's one of my favorite things ever. If you have interest, it's 1/2 block E of Oak Park Avenue on Cermak Rd. S side of the street.

I know that Village Creamery has had a young coconut ice cream in the past. I don't know if it's a permanent flavor or how it works, but it's delicious. Kind of delicate and not over powering. (from their website: macapuno – sweetened young coconut in coconut flake ice cream)

I second Village Creamey; We've tried their jackfruit, mangosteen and pandan leaf ice creams. Interestingly enough, I don't see the pandan leaf listed on their website - it tasted like a mix of pandan leaf and coconut - delicious.

Have you called any Oberweis locations? I seem to recall getting some there last year. Also, if you're in to the Fed-Ex dry ice thing, there is excellent Coconut to be had from Cincinnati's Graeter's. http://www.graeters.com/

margie's candies (and ice cream) makes coconut ice cream and sells it by the pint. it's very rich. call first, if you're interested, but i think coconut is a standard flavor for them. justjoan

For the record, phone inquiries discovered that:

Margie's Candies also had coconut ice cream.

But Patel Bros. and Oberweis did not.

Which is very unusual, because Reena brand definitely makes one [ http://www.tandoorchef.com/reenas.asp ) & I've bought it at Patel's in the past.

Talenti makes an excellent coconut gelato.

So - I also have to recommend the Coconut Milk Ice Cream from Purely Decadent.

I'm currently eating dairy-free and this is a very nice alternative. Not only does it come in coconut flavor (which is a given) but the vanilla is a nice, mellower version of the same.

In case you're curious - it also comes in Chocolate, Cookie Dough, Mint Chip. I've found it at Whole Foods, but aparently it is also available at some Jewel's

Joy, if you're ever in the area, just keep it in mind. The proprietor of the place will let you sample as many of the 50 or so flavors she keeps on hand, and she will probably even encourage you to sample more than you want to. They usually have odd (ish) flavors along with standards, like avocado, fig, jalapeno, corn bread, mango, cantaloupe, tequila, and much, much more. The creamy coconut is out of this world imo.

Scooters flavor today is coconut. Too late, I know.
