Aug 4th Jack In The Box coupon: 2 tacos for free

I used to live on the west coast and would sometimes eat the tacos when they were on sale 2 for 99 cents. Can't say I have been in a while but I though people might want to get a shot a some free tacos.

there hasnt been a Jack In the Box in Chicago in ages..although I am partial to those digustingly fake tacos so I grab a few anytime im in Alton

I am pretty certain that Burger King's tacos are an analog of Jack in the Box tacos. Due to geography, I have not been able to conduct a side-by-side. If you ever try them, I'd be interested in your opinion.

The Burger King tacos (no longer sold in the Rockford area. Are they still in Chicago metro?) were a pretty good substitute for Jack's tacos, but Jack has a lighter crispier shell. There was a sandwich shack in Oak Park on Lake Street that was torn down a few years ago that came the closest IMO to replicating that deep fried goodness of Jack's tacos.

The last time I checked, Burger King in Highland Park still had the tacos on their menu.

I will guess Jack in the Box was likely my very first taco. It was exotic enough for me to drive my teenage friends to Chicago to try. Brave soul I was going to Irving Park and Kedzie, when my grandparents lived very nearby. I just loved those greasy tacos.

I'll take your word the crust is lighter in Jack's version. For my blurry memory, Burger King is just about the only thing that has come close in years. Looking at that picture, it doesn't quite fit the picture of Jack's in my mind's eye. Jack's was more compressed, crispier and had shredded lettuce.

Now that I think about it a bit more, the brain taco preparation from Don Pedro's on 18th Street might be more Jack-like than Burger King's. Of course, I would never expect brains at Jack's or Burger King.

For a minute there, I thought you were going to dig out an old Polaroid or Kodak 110 shot of a Jack in the Box taco, and we'd uncovered the Patient Zero of internet food photographs.

Based on your BK photo, I would agree that Jack's taco is more compressed, has shredded lettuce, and I remember more sauce than the BK taco. Jack's tacos clam-up real tight during the deep frying, and I am surprised the staff can pry them open to get cheese, lettuce, and sauce into the tacos. My experience with these Jack tacos have been in San Diego and Phoenix areas. I just wish that Jack In The Box would start building more restaurants north of St. Louis Metro East area of Illinois. Being in Missouri and Illinois was the result of Ralston-Purina (based in St. Louis) owning the Jack chain for a number of years. I wasn't aware of any Jack's in Chicagoland in years past. I thought it was just a West Coast thing until the R-P ownership.

Jack in the Box also was my first taco experience growing up in Washington, DC......they were all over that area back in the 70s....and boy, was Jack scary looking back then!

Anyway, Burger King's version is in fact the closest I've found....albeit with much less meat, cheese and sauce....but still, glad to have it when the craving strikes.

On a sad note, just got back from CA, and it appears Jack has discontinued the Monster Taco....which was a bigger, greasier version of the original...with tomatos added.....it shall be missed, and hopefully enough people will complain so that they bring it back....

I believe in addition to two in Alton, there is a Jack in the Box in Litchfield, IL off of I-55 at one of the major exits. My husband always wants to stop if we go down to St. Louis so he can relive his high school days. I thought the tacos were pretty disgusting at first, but I have to admit they do grow on you.

OMG (I can't believe I'm replying to a Jack in the box thread) -- as a grad student, I requested the original Filet-o-Fish every time I went in the hopes that it would return to the menu.... I did the same with the deep fried apple pie but no success there.

I understand your efforts. I liked those fried pies, too.

I was on a one-woman campaign to bring Dr. Pepper to the line up of beverages served in restaurants. Back in the day (70's into the 80's), it was an anamoly to have Dr. Pepper in any restaurant or fastfood. I would always ask anyway, then show sad disappointment it wasn't available. Life is better now.

Jack in the Box was indeed in the Chicago area many years ago. I used to frequent the one on the NE corner of Clark and Ridge. But speaking of deep fried apple pies at McDonalds, Jack in the Box had a deep fried lemon pie that was great. I drove a cab on the north side back then and whenever I'd run out of small bills I'd always stop there for pie to break a 20.

When I lived in Texas in the 80s Jack In The Box's were everywhere. Most people thought of them as near the bottom of the fast food world. Nasty food with questionable food safety standards.

New to Jack in the Box.....drum roll.........Taco Nachos! Essentially small little triangles of (soggy, of course) tortilla shellls filled with the legendary Jack taco meat....topped off with a ton of slimy nachos cheese, and a few jalapenos....on a bed of really obliterated lettuce..

Disgusting.......delicious.......

The first taco that I ever ate came from a Jack in the Box in my hometown in Upstate New York. I've been frustrated that I couldn't find them anywhere that I lived, although I delightedly ate a couple of tacos from a Jack in the Box in Anacortes, Washington while on holiday in the Pacific Northwest a few years ago.

After reading through this thread yesterday, I was determined to find a Burger King serving tacos and luckily found one today at 1401 West Fullerton. Lo and behold, they closely resembled the Jack in the Box product - deep fried, meat/bean paste filling and a sweet/hot condiment.

Greasy? Yes. Authentic,? Definitely not. Tasty? Yes!
