I have been looking all over for instant espresso powder and I have come up empty handed. I did locate a source at Baker's Catalogue BUT...I am making a cake for Easter and even if I ordered it today...it wouldn't get here in time. So that said...does anyone know of an "emergency substitution"? Can I do something with regular instant coffee?

This was discussed before. Did you try Treasure Island?

I've always bought it at Caputo's on Harlem. It makes a just fine Tiramisu. (I'm at work, so I don't have the brand. It's a small glass jar with a green and white label and a green lid)

Thanks for the link, Erik M. I did see your discussion...I was looking to see if anyone had a "substitution" recipe I might be able to make due with....Example...instant coffee in some amount that can be used instead?
Unfortunately, we live in the 'burbs and do not have a Treasure Island.

Thanks for your help. I will keep my eye out for the brand you used.

    PB&F,

If you live int the Western burbs you might want to try Casey's in Naperville. I've never looked for espresso powder, but have usually found any ingredient that I was missing at Casey's.

As a resident of Chicago, I invite you to come on over. I'd go to La Unica, rather than Treasure Island though. :)

Medaglia d'Oro is the "Italian" brand of an espresso that is made by the same company as, and is very similar or identical to, the "Cuban" and "Puerto Rican" brands Pilon and Bustelo. See link (another Cuban emigre makes good). All of the above have an instant version, as does the most "Cuban" one, Llave, I believe (from Gavina, another Cuban-American firm).

Caputo's is a good call, too. If you are out west, the one in Addison might be convenient.

Thanks Flip for the tip! I do live in the western suburbs and I just called Casey's and they have it (top shelf, aisle 3!)! You have saved my Easter Chocolate Cake! The man that answered the phone said it is indeed the Medaglia d'Oro brand.

    Thanks everyone for your help.
