Today was the first day and I stopped by to see, I mean taste the offerings.

    http://picasaweb.google.com/GeorgeStewartLaw/SugarBlissCupcakes#

They have several different types of cupcakes (that is what this actually is a cupcake boutique ,not a cake boutique) on offer. Today they had, upon my arrival pretty close to 3 pm Banana Banana, Black & White, Chocolate Peppermint, Vanilla Vanilla, Strawberry Dream, and Texas Red Velvet. You are supposed to check online for Daily flavors, http://www.sugarblisscakes.com. The cost is $3.50 per cupcake and $1.50 per mini. They also offered frosting shots for $1; coffee, milk, tea, and two stools at a counter facing out onto Wabash. I am generally not offended by prices, but even I think a 6" Cake for $35 is a bit much, I think I thought the standard round was 8".

I will admit the cupcakes were cute. They are not frosted in the traditional sense. I tried the Vanilla Vanilla and the Texas Red Velvet. I am from South Carolina so I had to go and ask what was Texas Red Velvet. I was told the owner was from Texas, hence the name. As I have noted in prior posts, I love sweets, but not too sweet and that applied here as well. I purchased both cupcakes as regulars, not minis because all that was available as minis were Banana Banana and Strawberry Dream, neither even remotely intrigued me. I certainly hope they figure out that they should always have plenty of the basics available as minis.

I probably would have tried seven, as minis but not as regular cupcakes. So I only tried, what I imagined I would like. The first thing I noticed was a crunch when I bit into the Vanilla Vanilla. You know when you bake, the tops of muffins are generally done before the bottom and can lend itself to an actual crunch that is not dissimilar to a cookie. It was really, really crunchy and sweet. It was also very eggy. Two bites of this and I was prepared to do the old rumored Jennifer Anniston, taste and spit.

The Texas Red Velvet fared much better. I tasted; I chewed; I swallowed... all of it! Unlike Molly's Cupcakes, the cream cheese was not salty, in fact the frosting was quite good. It also has a crunchy top but it grew on me. The cake was not too sweet compensating for the sweet sweet frosting. This I would consider doing again because I work in the Loop, it would not be my first or second red velvet cupcake by choice. Those honors would go to Sweet Mandy B's and, believe it or not, Nordstrom Cafe.

I suspect the location will allow this spot to flourish, there really is not a bakery in the loop.

PS I have uploaded the pictures and hopefully you can see them now.

Very interesting way of decorating the cupcakes. Thanks for telling us all about another cupcake shop. I need to go on a Chicago Cupcake Crawl. :)

I haven't been to the store, but I tried a couple of their cupcakes at an event in Dec. Loved them! Really liked how light and airy the cake was--better than most I've had lately. Highly recommend!

Red velvet w/ cream cheese frosting honors go to Twisted Sister Bakery in Old Town.

I attended a private event at Sugar Bliss a few weeks ago, here's my take.

Close your eyes and imagine a state of extreme happiness, joy, or dare I say ecstasy? When your senses are engaged, it causes a state of pure bliss. For many of us, nothing brings us closer to that euphoric state than a sweet, sugary, cup cake. The first scent of these sugary delights rushes endorphins to your brain and brings back fond memories of childhood.

“Sugar Bliss” on Wabash, has taken aim at your senses with a devilish assortment of freshly baked cakes of desire. Baked from scratch daily, these mini works of art are as visually appealing as they are delicious! Owner Teresa Ging left a successful career in finance to pursue her passion, and to seduce us with each passing bite.

Unlike cupcakes of the past, these cakes feature flavors that range from subtle to sublimely decadent. There are over twenty flavors available, with ten featured daily. Favorites include the sinful red velvet, moist and creamy carrot, and the bright and fresh flavor of orange creamsicle. Nothing is more blissful than chocolate. Cravings will be satisfied with heavenly creations like the chocolate peanut butter and the intoxicating “black & white” (dark chocolate cake/vanilla butter cream).

Depending on you appetite, mood, and/or craving, “Sugar Bliss” has a cake right for you. For those in search of a decadent escape, sugar bliss offers large full size cupcakes sure to awaken your soul. For those wanting a mini rush, all flavors are offered in mini two bite sizes, perfect for a quick pick me up.

How much does all this happiness cost? Regular cupcakes are $3.50 a piece/ $40 a dozen, while minis go for $1.50 each/ $15 a dozen with both available for delivery. So whether your pursuit of happiness leads you to directly to their door, or if you prefer you joy delivered, “Sugar Bliss” will surely have you yearning for more.

I have to say, the chocolate with coconut frosting may be the best cupcake I've ever had. Wow! and then get a cup of coffee around the corner at Intelligentsia. As an old college buddy of mine would have said.."that's the way to do it up right!"

Mark the date and time, I declare this cupcake thing officially over. It was charming when it was just the Magnolia (and Buttercup) in NY but it's being done to death. Hey, let's open 75 New York Style pizza places in Chicago seemingly overnight! Won't that be awesome?

I don't want to see any more cupcakes. Ever.

Now if someone would bring Rice to Riches to Chicago, well, that's another story.
