I tried the new My Pie location in Northbrook last Friday. I hadn't been to My Pie since the early 90's at the now closed Lincoln Park location. My brother and I split a thin crust sausage pizza and a deep dish pizza. The deep dish arrived first after they somehow thought we wanted spinach on our thin and remade it. It was a thinner deep dish pizza, closer to Burt's height I would say, and could have used a little more sauce. I thought it was very good, but not quite as good as the perrenials (Lou Malnati's, Gino's East, Due). The thin was really thin, which I like a lot. We tend to order our pizzas well done, but this didn't help the pizza. The crust got worse on the edges, and we thought the middle pieces were better. Next time, I'll order it as they make it. Unfortuately again, I could tell it just wasn't in the top echelon of thin crust, tavern style joints that I love. They also sell thin and deep dish slices, which is very convenient. Overall, I would say that My Pie is a great place for pizza, but falls just short on both thin and deep dish pizzas for me to call it one of the best around. Also combined with My Pie is a placed called Lil' Guys Sandwiches, Soups, and Smoothies. The sandwiches looked really good. I'd like to try some of those next time. The combo of both places under one roof is nice and I will be back. A nice addition to the North Shore.

I'd say this about Lil' Guys sandwiches: For reasons I can't quite define, they look better than they taste. I live near the Bucktown location, and stop in occasionally if I'm hungry and don't feel like pizza from My Pi or chicken from Nick's Pit Stop. And for whatever reason, I'm always mildly disappointed in what I take home. I don't know if it's bland meat or unimaginative toppings, but the sandwiches always seem to be more pleasing to the eye than the taste buds. I wish that wasn't the case - they're close and I do love me a good sandwich.

Is this the place that serves those tiny little sandiches ("lil guys"?) on small round buns? I used to live a few blocks away, and if it's the place I remember, those sandiches were horrible. The bun was squishy and sweet as candy. It was like dessert - not good for a sandwich.

went here today..pizza was decent although tomato sauce was practically non existent..cracker thin crust was great
atmosphere though was terrible in that it was the usual "screaming kids running wild while mom visits with lunch pal" scenario so prevalant at lunchtime in this area..in this case besides screaming four of the eight brats were singing at the top of their lungs for a good 25 min

My Pi had really good tasting pizza, especially noteworthy was the buttery thin crust and the fresh quality ingredients.

On the negative, it was light on the sauce. And it made me feel like the Grinch... noise! noise!! noise!!! That place is absolute noise chamber with tin tiled ceilings, floor to ceiling glass on all sides of you, and wooden laminate flooring, there is no softness in there whatsoever. The Starbucks style decor does not work for a place serving pizza & kids. Don't go there expecting to carry a civil conversation with anyone, it's great place to go for a romance break up...

A clandestine lunch at the Lombard location led to a relationship that is now in its 35th year. Can't remember much about the pizza. For several years our regular dinner place was the Spinnaker across the street as well as Longy's for Tacos

    Reports Vittel:

My Pie Pizza (2010 N. Damen Ave., 73-394-6900; 1361 Shermer Ave., Northbrook, 847-715-9009) celebrates its 38th anniversary by offering a dinner for four for $19.71.

The menu includes a large deep-dish pizza (with up to two toppings), a large salad for four and beverages for four.

    The deal runs through Thanksgiving.

"My Dad owned and operated My Pie Pizzeria for 38 years," says current owner Rich Aronson. "I hope to take it another 38, and my two daughters pick up from there."

Speaking as someone who used to frequent the My Pie location in Rogers Park, that sounds good to me.

We recently opened and are interested in hearing feedback. YES, it is the My Pie Pizza you remember, originally on Sheridan near Loyola. Same fabulous deep dish pizza that has been around since 1971 (plus lots more!).

We've brought My Pie into the 21st century -- no more dark wood or fireplace. But still a cozy feel. Tell us your thoughts!

If you haven't been to visit yet, it's at 1361 Shermer Rd, by the train station in downtown Northbrook.

(I have financial interest in this restaurant)

    Hi,

Thank you for disclosing your interest.

I had seen your signage recently, then forgot about it. I was wondering if you were related to the city location. Wasn't it called: My Pi?

I've never been to the Loyola location. I hope someone who has will visit and comment on their experience compared to the original.

There is another location on Damen, right around Armitage.

I really enjoyed the thin crust I used to order from the old Fullerton location My Pi...very distinct.

I haven't had the pizza at the Bucktown location...good coffee though!

We order in from My Pi Bucktown pretty frequently because it's one of the 4 foods (!!!) my SO's 9 & 10 year old sons will eat...yes it's painful. I read about all of your children who are into cooking and eating cool stuff and I cry :(

Anyway...it's not bad--I'm a Barnaby's fan so to me, the crust is just too thin but the sauce is decent--not too sweet (I can't stand that) and the cheese tastes "real" (not easy to come by these days.) The kids don't do toppings either but we've ordered the sausage and pepperoni a couple of times and both are good and fresh.

If you like the cracker crust type of pizza, this is solid. On the plus side, you can eat a half of a large pizza and feel like you barely consumed anything so it's got that going for it! :D

I used to get thin crust from the Bucktown location quite often until Piece started take out and places like Coalfire opened up. It's *ok* pizza -- for pizza cooked on a conveyor belt. The crust is somewhat buttery and the sauce is very herb-y. I always had to tell them 'well done' as it would otherwise come out pale and wan.

A couple months ago I had the Northbrook verison and it was the same, I guess.

That's a perfect description of the thin crust at My Pie. I used to eat it frequently years ago in Bucktown, my girlfriend at the time would always order a large and I'd always end up hungry because I felt guilty consuming too much in front of her. In hindsight I should of gotten an XL and eaten 3/4 of it, wouldn't of made a difference today, and I would of had a full belly at the time.

It is very good pizza, just not very filling.

with the thin crust pizza that's just how I like it, but I hope the price is ok. By the way, is it ok for you to post our pizza choices?

If I grasped your question correctly, you are certainly free to comment on either 1) What you choose to order for your pizza, and/or 2) Where you choose to buy your pizza from.

One of my sisters loved pineapple and artichoke on pizza. The only time a pizza parlor ever called back for a reconfirmation was for that order. They thought it was a prank order. Fortunately, she has shifted to spinach deep dish, which is less likely to trigger a call.

There should be local zoning laws regarding what you're allowed to put on a pizza. Pineapple should be a banned ingredient. :)

Dave, I actually like pineapple and ham pizza. I never had it until I spent time in London and a local joint seemed to feature it a lot. I know it isn't for everyone and it seems to have a bad wrap. But I like it.

Years ago, myself and a group of friends used to have a regular dinner date at Gullivers. One member of our group always ordered pineapple and ground beef on his pizza. Nobody would dare share it with him. In fact, we made him keep his pizza on an adjacent table so we wouldn't have to look at it.

I wouldn't call the Northbrook location cozy. But if you like a nice, bright room, with a lot of windows, then you'll love it. I'm going to be filling up my slice of pizza card at My Pi in the coming months as my new office in Northbrook opens soon. It's nice to be able to get slices of thin or deep dish. Not my favorite pizza place for either style, but it's very good.

I have been twice to the Northbrook location, and neither time was a good service experience. The first time, admittedly, was when they first opened. They didn't prepare enough slices, and while my family sat and ate theirs, the one I ordered was nowhere to be found. They stopped selling slices in the store that night and concentrated on whole pies. I did get my money back, but it was very disappointing. The second time we tried, which was a couple of months later, they forgot my son's order. We asked the person who brought the rest of the meal out about it, and he shrugged and walked back to the kitchen. After waiting a few more minutes, I went to the counter to get it myself. The food itself is fine. The pizza was ok. The garlic bread was ok. I wish I could give it a more enthusiastic endorsement. There are enough other pizza places in Northbrook that I like better, though, that we haven't been back.

Pizza aside, they do have sandwiches and salads that we did not try. The location is good. There are some tables and booths. It does have a crowded feel.

Had lunch here earlier this week and thought the pizza looked a lot better than it tasted. There just wasn't a lot of flavor in any of the components. When I compare this pizza to others available in the area -- Barnaby's, Pizano's & Little Red Hen, to name a few -- it didn't really measure up for me. Neither the cheese, crust nor toppings really resonated for me.

The space is bright and comfortable, and the service was friendly and helpful.

    Image

It was unclear to me if L'il Guys, whose sandwiches are served here, is a separate entity sharing the space or if it's just a brand name for the sandwiches sold at My Pie. Seeing 2 names above the door is almost always confusing to me.

We opted for a large, thin-crust pizza with pepperoni, garlic and mushroom . . .

    Image

    Image
    Detail
I was kind of surprised, given how great this looks, with the overall lack of flavor. All I could really taste was the garlic. Not even the pepperoni carried any noticeable flavor. I brought 2 leftover pieces to my friend and he agreed with my assessment. He was excited when he saw the slices but then immediately disappointed by what he described as "surprising blandness."

    Image
    It's wafer thin
Ultra-thin crust delivers texturally but not so much on the flavor side.

I'll definitely be back -- not necessarily right away -- and will try another pizza combination and some other items. There's a lot of potential here and maybe a different set of toppings would help me to find it. Sandwiches and salads looked pretty good, too, regardless of whether they were My Pie or L'il Guys' products.
