    LTHForum--

Chilam Balam opens soon (today, I think), in the basement spot on Broadway in Lakeview that used to be an Italian restaurant (the name of which escapes me).

They pitch it as "a sustainably minded BYOB restaurant serving Mexican shared plates with a farm fresh twist." The chef came up through Frontera and Adobo Grill.

Intriguing. Might make a nice bookend to the very satisfying but decidedly non-fancy Buena Vista just up the block.

A couple other Wicker Park happenings ....

FINALLY, Indian on Milwaukee, just south of the Walgreens), something I've been ranting about for years. The menu looks pretty pedestrian, but if this place is any good, it could make a fortune

Cumin - Modern Nepali & Indian Cusine

    "Coming Soon"
sample menu: Chicken Tikka Masala, Palak Paneer, Lamb Curry, Dal Makhani, Biryani, Naan, Samosa, Tandoori Chicken/Lamb/Shrimp, Momo, Nepalese Goat & Chicken Meat

Also, on North between Bell & Oakley, there's a sign for Baked, a pastry shop. Not sure if it will be retail or just catering.

Walking up Kedzie today, I noticed a totally nondescript new joint-- Dolce. Per the laminated take-away cards they had by the entryway, the place describes itself as "Nonna's recipes from Italy complimented with delicious dishes from Asia." (?!?!) "Drawing inspiration from the diverse Northwest side neighborhood where the principals were raised, and their own ethnic backgrounds, they have pulled together a savory, eclectic menu that will both surprise and satisfy." Hmmm intriguing

Apparently they had a grand opening 8/14 at 4 p.m. However, this is absolutely the first I have seen or heard of it.

Yeah, I noticed that a while back, but assumed, from its forbidding nondescriptness (or vice versa), that it was another Eastern European bar with a randomly non-Eastern European name, where soccer is always playing on the TV and the smoking ban has not gone into effect yet.* But now I'm curious.

    * What's gotta be one of those is "The Soccer Bar" on Kedzie near Peterson, though.

Just found even more info on Dolce, after perusing on Grub Street Chi.

Their menu is a smattering of Asian-meets-Italian.

Appetizers seem to skew Asian, with the likes of "kuya" rolls, or filipino lumpia, also gyoza, BBQ "sticks" of marinated pork skewers and chicken wings with an Asian sauce. Then the menu takes a 180 and offers a few Italian salads (Caesar, mesculin, caprese), and a few straightforward sandwiches (burger, grilled chicken, chicken parm). Entrees include chicken parm alongside "Dolce" grilled pork chops marinated and grilled with "special" sauce, sweet Filipino sliced pork "Tocino" and "Japanese-style" Wafu steak (whatever that is).

Sides are random: sweet potato fries, rice, fried plantains, grilled asparagus. And desserts feature tiramisu and green tea ice cream. And orange sherbet... Do with this information what you will.

Yeah, that makes sense. There are a couple of Filipino places, like M3, along that stretch that I don't think anybody has ever so much as poked their head into (myself included... can't work up the enthusiasm based on past Filipino experiences, sorry RST). Filipino-Italian. That's interesting.

I popped in to Dolce last week and was handed a limited opening menu with 5 apps and 5 entrees--caprese salad, lumpia, "BBQ sticks", wings, tocino, pork chops, Wafu steak, penne salsiccia, and salmon teriyaki.

$14.95 for one of each, and that's it for now.

That does sound good! Your post tempts me to start popping into some of those places to catch Fire games. Though I'd prefer one with "forbidding descriptness".

Sadly, that's a private club. I think it's really called "the Soccer Diner", and it's closer to Foster than Peterson; by Peterson, Kedzie is residential/educational, and may not even be called Kedzie.

    Aurora/Naperville

There's a western themed bar opening soon in the old Spaghetti Warehouse space on Ogden at Rte 59 in Aurora. It will be open from 3:00 pm on mainly as a "dance hall" but will also be serving some type of food (or more likely, "food").

Also, the City Club which was also on Ogden, but in Naperville at the Iroquois Center, has closed. It will be replaced by something called Laurel Mediterranean Grill.

Neither of these newcomers appear to be chains, which could be a plus.

While "of the taco" was a favorite destination in my high school* years, and remains an occasional** guilty pleasure when i'm home, I will not mourn the loss of this location.***

It was, putting it kindly, substandard. I made the trek down once; that was enough. I've since had "good" del taco at home, so i don't think it's solely due to my palate changing...

There were fresh roses in the window, but a plastic curtain was taped over the entrance to the seating area. I hope they were just painting the dining room and failed to post notice...in addition to liking their food, I have two Groupons to use up there. : - )

Decided on a detour all the way to Lao Szechuan, which was worth the trip as always. Just hope I can get some northside chinese soon too!
