I've search and couldn't locate the thread that mentioned a stellar submarine sandwich shop in the area. It had great fries, too, apparently, that may come with some sauce or dressing on them, if I recall correctly.

Anyone recall the what and the where of it all? Thanks!

Ghazi - I'm on the go so regret not being able to link / address these right away, but the two sub + fries places that come to mind in the area for me are Starship and Sub Tender, both in Forest Park. Neither qualify as "good" in the sense Bari / Graziano / Riviera do, but at least Starship has "stellar" going for it in one sense of the word.

No fries, but Alpine (7538 North Ave) makes a nice sandwich.

When I lived in Oak Park in the early-1990's I'd stop at the Alpine for subs and thought they were amongst the best in the area. The shop is so close to Johnnies on North Avenue it was often overlooked. Anybody been there recently?

I almost stopped in to Alpine last wknd. Seriously.

BUT, If I were a guessing man, I'd guess that the sub place is Submarine Tender in Forest Park.
Their subs are Mr Submarine quality, however, the B&G fries (butter and garlic) are quite an option if you dig fried starch with salt and garlic. If I were strictly looking for a sub in the area, I'd be at Alpine in a heartbeat. I'd get a sub and potato salad (made with real mayo) from Alpine and be happier. Sub Tender subs are fake meat things.

This might be the thread you're talking about (left the hilit in on purpose, normally I find it extremely annoying:)

Edited twice - once to throw in the thread link, and another to clarify. Lack of sleep.

Alpine is good, probably the best in the area, but it's not in the Bari, Riviera league.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Alpine yesterday, which is quite excellent.

Sub Tender may also be the place OP had in mind.

So... where'd you eventually head, Ghazi?

After being disappointed at the kitchen being closed between 1 and 3 (?) at Marion Street Market and looking for some picnic food for matinee and lunch in the park date with My bride we headed over to Alpine.

An Alpine Special, soda, chips and a cannoli.

Very fresh bread, awesome meats. Could of used some more meat and a little zip from some onion or giardiniera.

The cannoli was nice and fresh and a bit on the sweet side. A perfect dessert!

A nice quiet corner of Lindberg Park in Oak Park on a beautiful afternoon. Nice!

I never understood the love for Alpine. Having Bari at my doorstep, perhaps I've been spoiled, but soft Gonnella rolls don't do anything for me in the Italian sub department. I just crave that crunchy texture every time I bite in.

With Da Riv only a short drive away from this place, I can't see myself ever returning for a serious sub craving. Also, I found their cannoli to be nothing more than serviceable.

Da Riv would be good 20 minutes away. Sometimes you don't have that much time to grab a sandwich.

    Interesting!

Involved in a discussion on Facebook on the “Flips Beef of Glen Ellen” page and they made a comment...

I wonder if they are related other than being sub shops?
