Help from locals?

Hello Everyone,

I found this site while searching for something to order on line and have shipped to Mississippi for my boyfriend's birthday. He is from Chicago and I would like to surprise him with something that would remind him of home.

I am not familiar with any favorites and would like to ask the locals for any suggestions. What is Chicago famous for that can be shipped?

I have faith in y'all and want to thank you in advance for making his day special.

What neighborhood is he from? Does he consider himself a part of some particular ethnicity (irish, italian, etc.)?

At http://www.tastesofchicago.com/ you can order from a number of Chicago favorites. I frequently ship Lou Malnati's pizza to friends of mine now living in other cities.

I second the suggestion for Lou Malnati's. When I lived in Texas, a friend always sent Lou's pizza at gifts. Not the same as a trip to Chicago, but pretty good.

I was also going to suggest Tast of Chicago.

I'd recommend the "Ultimate Chicago Tastes" Combo.

This gives you a little bit of everything. There are a few other combos available, but nothing says Chicago for me like Lou's, Vienna Beef, and Carson's. Eli's to lesser extent, but hey, who doesn't like cheesecake???

I'll just throw out there another rec for the Giordano's mail-order pizza. I sent one to a buddy in Louisville as a thank-you gift for his help with my wedding, and as someone who would pretty much camp out at Giordano's whenever he was in town, he was all smiles with his gift. So I offer that recommendation if your boyfriend is equally crazy about Giordano's pizza.

P.S. Also, just an fyi to everyone, when I checked their site just now, it appears that G's has widened their mail-order pizza selection. I could've sworn a couple years ago it was just a cheese or spinach selection, but not they've added pepperoni, sausage, and a veggie to the list. Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but if I'm not, I figgered I'd throw that out there as a public service announcement.
