If you're willing to go to Little Village instead of Pilsen you can still do Nuevo Leon and Bombon, a block apart on 26th Street. This Bombon location has the same beautiful cakes and pastries as the closed-due-to-fire Pilsen shop but has no seating.

Tonight we did another 1-2 punch involving Rainbow Cone. Our prior stop was Vito & Nick's. A pretty short drive between the two and a heckofa 1-2 punch.

BBQ at Honey 1 followed by dessert at Margie's Candies! Great anytime, but an especially popular combination for our out-of-town visitors . . .

    A couple involving sushi:
Tanoshii, with drinks at the Edgewater Lounge.
Also, our sushi crawl: start at Tanoshii for one of Mike's creations, then on to Noodle Zone for a quick spicy tuna roll, then a quick one and done at Hama Matsu (not so good, but, hell, this is a crawl; you gotta take the bad with the good), then a nice finish at Sushi Luxe before heading next door to Simon's for drinks.
Also, whenever we had guests visiting from out of town, the one-two combo of Pequod's Pizza, then drinks at the Vic's Brew and View was always a hit, and if the guests were still standing at that point, a finishing left hook at the L&L Tavern.
I hate kettle cooked chips. It takes too much effort to crunch through them.

1: Biscuits and gravy with two over-easy at Two-Way Grill. Gravy needs salt, pepper and hot sauce, but the biscuits are actually decent, and most important, fresh.
    2: Italian sub from Riviera.

Catered surprise party for Mr. X was a perfect one-two punch with Smoque (chopped & sliced brisket, pulled pork, chicken and Texas sausages, mac n cheese, slaw, beans and rolls) followed by a Delightful Pastries creation (layer of vanilla cake, layer of chocolate cake, filled with dark chocolate mousse and raspberries, buttercream frosting, decorated with raspberries, chocolate shavings and gold non-pareils). Even better, there were leftovers!

Banh mi from Nhu Lan, followed by the rice pudding in the cooler case at HarvesTime, right across the parking lot. The cold, creamy rice pudding cools off the heat from the hot peppers on the banh mi.

Actually, I'd forgotten (*stupidly* ) to write it up, but mine was a spring roll from Nhu Lan (the vegetarian one is surprisingly tasty, my fave of the 3-pack combo) and a chocolate chess pie from Hoosier Mama. The fresh minty background post-spring-roll (to put it politely) goes deliciously with the rich chocolate pie. Not that they're near each other or anything, but I highly recommend the combination.

That's just cheating, Michele! What wouldn't be a great one-two punch when it ends with sweet, delicious pie?

My most recently one-two punch was cocktails are Bar DeVille and then dinner at Mado. As mentioned in my post, I may reverse the order next time, as the the visit to DeVille had a wallop of a punch on an empty stomach...

This is my fantasy one-two punch in reverse. For me, Hoosier Mama is on the walk home from Bar DeVille. I can't count the number of times I've walked home from a jolly evening of cocktails and stopped to peer longingly into the darkened Hoosier Mama space and wished with all my might that they kept late-night (or at least late-evening) hours. My pie consumption would surely spike if I had after-drinking access to the shop's selection. This is not a complaint though. (If I could afford to bankroll extended Hoosier Mama hours, I probably would.) Chez happy_stomach keeps extended pie hours. Since I usually have back-up Hoosier Mama pie at home, I've indulged in the Bar DeVille-Hoosier Mama one-two punch more times than is healthy for me to count.

I would agree though that any combination that includes Hoosier Mama is a winner. (gush, gush, gush) Heck, I'm about to walk to Walgreens for cold medicine and then pick up a pie on the walk back. I think it's a safe bet that that will be just as excellent a one-two punch as any mentioned in this thread. :D

BTW, Michele, did you get your chocolate chess from the Hoosier Mama shop?* I think I was late to discover that Unicorn Cafe in Evanston now carries Hoosier Mama pie.** I rarely go in there now, but if Unicorn had pie like Hoosier Mama in my college days when I used to spend all my time there doing crosswords instead of school work, I surely would have packed on the freshman 15!

**Yeah, 'cause exactly what I need is Hoosier Mama near home and work. The embarrassment of riches...

Nothing beats 5-15 alcoholic beverages followed by a 3am spicy chicken roll from Lahore or gyros paratha from Ghareeb Nawaz on Devon. Be forewarned however, drunken tomfoolery is not exactly well received by the locals. And by all means avoid the lure of Hyderabad House's inviting glow lest you lose control and drink the two inches of oil that floats atop their curries.

Not for the faint of belly, but a serendiptious one-two punch: Italian beef & fries at Chickie's when stopped in traffic on Pulaski because of a train on the way down to Zaragoza for birria.

    Beef & fries:

    Date Night January 2010

My Bride and I have a tradition of heading out on Friday nights for dinner and a movie. It allows us to put the stresses of the week behind us and ease into the weekend with a fresh perspective.

Well, with dearth of movies at the theater and the recent talk about cocktail lounges we mixed it up a bit. :) By no means are we experts of the better cocktail lounges but after a recent visit to The Silver Palm to give their wares a try it got me interested in giving some more of them a try.

With the preamble set aside, last week we did the One-Two Punch of..

    Weegee's Lounge and then UrbanBelly.

More along these lines to come. GNL (Great Neighborhood Lounges) followed up by a GNR. :) What Fun!

If you are stuck in the culinary wasteland of Clark Street in Lincoln Park, a decent one-two I found while living there was a plate lunch from Aloha Eats (Loco Moco, sub fries for mac salad, add grilled onions, save some gravy for the fries) followed by some great, buttery linzer cookies and maybe a coffee at the Austrian Bakery. Two great, family-owned shops in the midst of LP mediocrity.
