Did anyone see Paula Deen last night at Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville? I did and she is amazing! She was so down-to-earth and it was evident she was very appreciative of her fans. Just a delight to meet. If you ever watch her show on Food Network...that is truely how she is in person.

I know she is in the Chicago-area for the next day or so signing her new cookbook (Sam's in Wheeling on Saturday)....if you have a chance to meet her...take the ride...she is a true gem!

Two words regarding paula deen: Ham Butter.

edit: and yes I know she didn't create ham butter, but seeing her make it made me giggle endlessly. It reminded me of the simpsons episode where homer tries to keep lisa from becoming a buddhist:

Homer: So, you think you know better than this family, huh?
Well, as long as your in my house, you'll do what I do,
and believe what I believe. [the camera pans to reveal
that Homer is talking to Bart] So butter your bacon!
    Bart: Yes, father. [does so]
Lisa: Mom, Dad, my spiritual quest is over.
Homer: Hold that thought. [to Bart] Bacon up that sausage, boy.
Bart: Dad, my heart hurts. [Homer glares at him] Ohh. [wraps a
slice of bacon around a sausage link and eats it]
    Lisa: I'm a Buddhist!
Homer: What? That's it -- no more chat rooms for you!

Paula Deen = grilled, bacon-wrapped corn on the cob :)

I know she didn't invent it but she introduced it to my household and we revere her for it. :D

Paula Deen is, basically, about half of the women I know in Kentucky. I think she's great.

    Hey, PB&F!

So, what time is The Lady going to be at Sam's in Wheeling? And come to think of it, where the heck IS Sam's in Wheeling?? I'm all over this - I really admire Ms. Deen for everything she's overcome in life to become such a great success - and I need to pick her brain for gumbo-making advice and such.

    Much obliged!

I'll give a ring in the morning - I couldn't make the leap from Sam's Wines & Liquors to Sam's Club. Much obliged for the scouting info, Ronnie. Geez, I hope the time it doesn't conflict with my basketball-watching!

Good morning! I looked on Food Network's site and it says she will be at Sam's Club at 1 today in Wheeling (no address given)....if you go to Food Network look under Contests/Offers then under Special Events (left side of screen). Call the Sam's Ronnie mentioned...I am not familiar with Wheeling so I would try there first! My recommendation though is to GET THERE EARLY! There were over 300 people in Naperville...also if you decide for her to sign a book be sure to call and ask where the book needs to be purchased from (or brought from home) b/c at one point I was told I could bring one into the store from home and when I got there they said "the publisher" said we had to buy the book from the store she is appearing at that day...check to be on the safe side. Anderson's did let me use the cookbook I brought but they weren't too happy about it but I explained I had called and they said I could bring my own. If you must buy from the store, again get there early as Anderson's did sell out of ALL of her cookbooks that night.

Have fun! She is a gem!

    sundevilpeg:

Gumbo's not as complicated as it sounds. Feel free to pick our brains here on the forum. I saw her show where she made gumbo and it was evident the roux she made was not dark enough to produce the final product. The magic of TV, no?

I just made gumbo last weekend.....homemade shrimp stock, home smoked andouille sausage, shrimp, okra.....gumbo is what you make of it and it just gets easier every time you do it.

Paula Deen is just like most of the people I've met who grew up/lived for any extended time in Savannah, GA (or elsewhere in the deep south). Just pleasant people. I can't watch her too much because she annoys me. Mostly because she talks with food in her mouth. It's a personal thing

A few other sites were having fun with this brilliant Paula Deen recipe this week:

A family member used a bunch of accumulated travel points to buy a set of Paula Deen cookware recently, and as far as I know, has so far been satisfied with the pieces. Has anyone else used it? I'm in the market for a new enamel-coated dutch oven for less than $60, and have it narrowed down to one from Lodge or one from Tramontina, but remain open to suggestions.
