Peep's Hot Dogs in Arlington Heights has been shut since a grease chute fire last month. The damage must have been more extensive than the Daily Herald article makes it sound. There are no signs up either explaining the closure or indicating when they might reopen, and the phone is answered by a telco recording saying "temporarily disconnected."

I'm hoping they were well insured and will reopen soon. "Mrs. Peep" (Sharon Rossman) is a neighborhood icon.

I walked by the former Aigre Doux space today and caught a glimpse in the door as someone was coming out. The interior was stripped down to bare floor and bare walls and I saw some lumber leaning up against one wall. Plus the person walking out had a tool box and a carpenter's level. Seems likely someone's building out the space for something new. Anyone heard about plans for this space?

Got all the dirt from Joe today while getting my haircut at Sal's. Roscoe Village update:

    1. Kaze is most likely not re-opening. They sold their deep fryer to the guy down the street (I'm guessing the guy mentioned above with sandwiches and charcuterie).

    2. If Kaze is to reopen it most-likely will be with a different chef.

    3. Costello's has been sold recently, nothing known about the new owners. Chris Costello sold both locations.

There's still no sign of life at the ice cream parlor. Does anyone have an update on that?

    Headcase and everyone else:

Here is more on the Metra/French Market.
    http://www.chicagofrenchmarket.com

Previously announced Chicago French Market vendors include:
    Canady Le Chocolatier
Chocolatier Michael Canady, who attended Richemonte School in Lucerne, Switzerland, and studied in
Antwerp, Belgium, will offer his distinctive selection of artisan chocolate bon bons, truffles, nougat,
ganache and dipped fruit slices ⎯ many handmade on site at Chicago French Market. Canady Le
Chocolatier opened his first Chicago location in 2005.

    Chicago Organics

Operated by a Chicago-based team dedicated to the expanded production, marketing and distribution of
locally grown and responsibly produced foods, Chicago Organics will offer an array of competitively
priced, 100% certified organic produce, meats and dairy products.

    Completely Nuts
Former construction worker Phil Mostaccio began selling his roasted nuts at a local fair back in 1991, all
from a cart that he handcrafted in his garage. Now Phil’s business, Completely Nuts, is one of Chicago’s
most renowned nuts shops and will offer a variety of nuts at Chicago French Market including roasted and
candied almonds, cashews, pecans and peanuts.

    Espression by Lavazza
In addition to its 2,045-square-foot Italian café within MetraMarket, the 114 year-old, family-owned
business will also serve its award-winning espresso and coffee drinks, plus authentic gelato within
    Chicago French Market.

    FliP Crepes
In 2003, France-native Antoine Elie began making and selling crepes at farmer’s markets throughout
Chicago. Using his grandmother’s crepe recipe as a base, Antoine enhanced the recipe with healthy
ingredients such as wheat flour, buckwheat and wheat germ, while also seeking opportunities to bring his
crepes to market year-round. Antoine’s FliP Crepes at Chicago French Market start with this perfected
crepe recipe, and incorporate select sweet and savory ingredients to make a distinctive version of the
traditional French crepe ⎯ a burrito-shaped crepe wrap called the FliP.

    Fraternite Notre Dame
The nuns of the Fraternite Notre Dame have created a loyal following for their pastries and other baked
goods. They will offer a wide selection of lovingly-made bakery items, including fresh breads, crème
brulees, quiches and beignets, plus dozens of other sweet and savory treats. A portion of their profits will
fund the Fraternite Norte Dame’s charitable work with families in need throughout Chicago.

Pastoral Artisan Cheese, Bread & Wine
Chicagoans Ken Miller and Greg O’Neill own and operate this European-inspired, authentic neighborhood
cheese and wine shop, offering the highest quality fine and artisan cheeses from America and around the
world, select small production wines and freshly baked breads, along with a full complement of related
items such as charcuterie and olives. Pastoral also offers custom gift collections, gourmet sandwiches
and salads, picnics, catering, plus ongoing classes and events. Pastoral already operates successful
locations in Lakeview and in the Loop and is known for its approachable and knowledgeable staff.

    Sweet Miss Giving’s
Sweet Miss Giving's Bakery and Gifting opened last year as a premier bakery and jobs program that
offers decadent baked goods for a good cause: more than 50 percent of all profits support the formerly
homeless and HIV/AIDS-affected men, women and children of Chicago House. Its Chicago French
Market location will serve homemade cupcakes, scones, cookies, biscotti, breakfast items such as
croissants, muffins and bagels, plus a variety of breads and gift items.

    Vanille Patisserie
Owned by Dimitri Fayard, the World Pastry Champion of 2008, and his wife Keli Fayard, an accomplished
cake designer, Vanille Patisserie is an award-winning French pastry shop that melds classic European
traditions with modern flavors. Vanille Patisserie specializes in wedding and special occasion cakes,
handmade chocolates and candies, mousse cakes, tarts and French macarons. The Chicago French
Market location will be Vanille Patisserie’s second shop.

    Wisconsin Cheese Mart
Headquartered in Old World Third Street in downtown Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Cheese Mart is a 70
year-old tradition. The Chicago French Market location will offer a large selection of the finest sheep, cow
and goats milk cheeses, all made by local Wisconsin cheese producers.

It appears to be a national chain - something to compete with Hooters, if the following description I found on the www is accurate in describing one of the chain's Houston locations:

Like Hooters, they have an all girl floor staff, most of them cute, young and wearing mini skirts. Unlike Hooters, they have big comfortable couches and La-Z-Boy recliners in the lounge area along with a huge fireplace. It sounds like there's some rivalry too - our waitress was trash talking Hooters big time and all that did was fuel my fantasy of a Brick House / Hooters waitress brawl in the parking lot. Hottt!

I think use of a search engine will probably reveal information about other locations of this company (I see there's one in Downers Grove, also), but after reading the above description I wasn't interested enough to search further - though the thought of a hair-pulling all-out fight between gals from those two clubs might be worthy of a special GNR award.

Plus - it's in Niles. I don't get it. Maybe BH would be good spot for guys to hang out while their wives are shopping at Fresh Farms or Wal Mart? :D

Yet another outpost of Orange is opening at 738 N. Clark, just between Chicago & Huron (next door to Clark Street Ale House). Saw a sign in the otherwise-papered-up window while on my way to work this morning, and confirmed it on their website - looks like it'll be opening this December.

Edited because I initially screwed up the link...I feel so ashamed

So the man who told me in a characteristic bit of deadpan that he had killed his best friend that afternoon because the guy had gone to Brazil and "seen many beautiful women", speaking in a voice that wouldn't quite allow me to dismiss the possibility (and this to me, someone he had never met, who had innocently wandered into his pizza counter) is now opening a restaurant called "Sprout"? In Lincoln Park? Satko was interesting, edgy and eccentric even for Ravenswood/Uptown. It'll be interesting to see how he approaches this.

They are in a brief reorganization, as Satko is no longer with the restaurant. He is fanatical about organic certification so the other partners decided to go a different direction and are currently scouting for a replacement exec chef. Hopefully it will reopen very soon in a week or two.

Not that I would have been tempted to go here anyway, but thanks for the warning.

    Long time lurker here.

La Vita at 1359 W. Taylor St. has been closed since early October.

Hopefully(from what I have read while lurking in previous threads) paving the way for a new Nella Pizzareia Napoletana.

I believe Turco's, at the corner of East Ave and Roosevelt, in Oak Park, is closed. I'll have to drive or walk by to confirm but passing it en route to The Depot last week there appeared to be a number of For Sale or For Lease signs in the windows and it looked empty.

As I was driving by yesterday, I saw that Le Lan has closed. I'm not in Chicago that much anymore, so I have no idea how long it has been gone. Any know the circumstances?
In any event, it's a shame; Le Lan was a really original, wonderful restaurant.

Both closed in mid-May because they weren't making enough money to stay afloat. Blame the economy.
