Hmmmm....I wonder how little time it would take this youngster to mow down a Coalfire sassich pie? I'd love to see him in a race with my Customary Dining Companion, another person who could eat pizza and nothing but for a month, no problem - good, bad, frozen, chain, thin, thick, whatever. While he has a reasonably discerning palate, he subscribes to the school of thought that insists that there is no such thing as a bad pizza. . .with the exception of Aurelio's. He has a branch almost literally across the street, but strenuously avoids their pie.

(this interests me, in that when I was growing up in AZ, there was another pizzeria named Aurelio's on McDowell Rd. in SW Scottsdale, which also produced a remarkably vile pie with cloyingly sweet sauce. Blech. Must be the name.)

I only wish I'd made sending pics part of the bet. Our boy was clearly agitated today, telling me that he was sending the last pizza pictures he was ever going to send. I tried to convince him that sending a pic or 2 from his phone was no harder than sending a text or an e-mail but he seemed defiant. Looking back, if I'd made it part of the bet, I think I might have him on the ropes right now.

In any case, breakfast was last night's leftover pizza from The Hut.

Around lunch time today, a ruling was requested. He sent me the following pic and asked if it was legit . . .

    Image
    Prospective Menu

I replied that it wasn't. Flatbread, pita bread, French bread and tortilla based pizzas are all out. I felt bad because he was probably hungry but I think I've already made this easy enough on him.

So, he opted for The Hut, yet again and ordered a fresh one . . .

    Image
Thick-crust pepperoni, onion and green pepper from The Hut

Clearly, he's wearing down. Taking/sending the pictures is irritating him and I'm guessing that even The Hut is beginning to piss him off. If I'd thought about the mechanics beforehand, I would have made photo-reporting a condition. Oh well, next time. :D

Yeah, pepperoni is actually sausage, even though it's not usually referred to as sausage. Oh that basis, though, I absolutely had to count it.

This saddens me. I loved the picture that looked like he was balancing a piece of pizza on his foot.

You might be playing a little dirty here. Unlike your other examples (pita, French bread, tortilla), there is no accepted uniform view of flatbread. There are plenty of definitions of pizza out there, but all of them fall under the broader flatbread category. Leaving aside the fact that plenty of places sell something called flatbread, but that any reasonable person would identify as pizza (see, e.g., Crust and Terzo Piano), in this case, the restaurant actually calls the items flatbread pizzas. I don't see where you have a leg to stand on in your denial.

Perhaps you and Pizzaboy need to appoint a third party to settle these questions as they arise?

Ronnie, he's totally cracking. Pizzaboy asking if he can eat flatbread pizza?!

And now that he was in Slice, and Gapers Block mentioned it... more media attention is sure to come... and he doesn't like the reporting... and the month isn't half-over yet...

I think you have a pretty good chance.

I think the media attention makes it more likely that he'll succeed. Not only is he looking at a nice pay day and lots of bragging rights around the office (and I'm assuming other friends of his as well), but now he's an internet phenom. Unless he reaches the point where he can't keep the pizza down (unlikely) he'll cruise to the finish line.

This is awesome! Thanks for posting this up for all to see Ronnie! I wish other regions had such fun and active boards...I'm going to have to make it out to Chicago.

To be honest, I'm kind of thinking he can pull through...but whatever you can do to convince him to keep sending pictures would be great. We love seeing the progress.

If he's traveling through Santa Fe at all and you need an ace up your sleeve...send him to Backroad Pizza...worst slice I've ever had in my life, I wouldn't even call it pizza.

Welcome to the board Eating the Road. I have to say that slice of pizza is a really disgusting looking thing. The cheese doesn't even look real. The website doesn't help that place at all. Anytime I see something with a "regional twist" instead of the real thing, I get worried.

    Pizzaboy must send pictures!!

Our boy is in transit and I'll probably get a stack of updates shortly.

As for pictures, I have a feeling -- and a hope -- that once he's back home, he'll be more amenable to providing them.

Since he's always in such good spirits, his crabbiness over the pics was very surprising to me. I think if the trip had lasted another couple of days, he might have cracked. In any case, he'll be back in town today and back in the office tomorrow. I'll have my camera, so there will be some pics, one way or the other! :P

He's leaving town again at the end of the week, this time to the east coast, so maybe that'll trip him up.

ETR, funny that the pizza you posted is so horrible because it looks pretty darned good. I wish he were going that way but he'd probably end up liking it, anyway. :?

Hook, I don't think he'll ever stop loving pizza. As others have posted, on November 1, he'll probably order a sausage pizza.

I agree. Flatbread pizza is still pretty much pizza in all but the "flatbread" modifier. Still serves the same function, same general ingredient list, same look, same heaviness, etc. If it weren't identified as such on the menu, I bet most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. But, where's the sausage?

Well, he was planning on asking them to add sausage but I nixed the flatbread, outright. I agree that's effectively pizza but part of my edge (what little I provided myself) is cutting off the convenience factor. Hey, I had to draw the line somewhere. 8)

I spoke to our boy, who just landed at O'Hare. Last night for dinner, he finished off the 2nd pizza from The Hut and as of when I spoke to him about an hour ago, he'd not yet eaten today. He'd just called his wife and asked her to put a Home Run Inn pizza in the oven, so that it would be ready when he got home. He also mentioned something about going to Barnaby's for dinner. I think, now that he's home, he's feeling more positive about taking pictures, so who knows? Maybe we'll have some new images later this evening.

I have to admire his honesty and willingness to check in with you before ordering the pizza. I myself would have ordered it, taken pictures, and eaten it with a clear conscience. You're definitely screwed in this bet. Go Pizzaboy!

I'm starting to think what we're dealing with here is one of those rare individuals who can literally eat the same thing day in, day out, for years at a time, with no desire to vary the routine. My mom is one of those - for the entire length of my teenage years, she had instant coffee for breakfast, a cold Oscar Mayer weenie in a slice of Home Pride whole wheat for lunch, and Life cereal right out of the box for dinner. I shit you not. To this day (and I haven't seen my teens for almost two decades now) she eats Life cereal for dinner. Except nowadays she sometimes has it for lunch too.....

Just wanted to bring this up to date . . . his lunch today was indeed a frozen Home Run Inn sausage pizza and dinner was from Barnaby's in Northbrook -- a large pizza with pepperoni, sausage and onion.

I will probably have some lunch pics tomorrow, as we'll be eating together. However, further proof that I've been bamboozled showed up when he offered to provide pics of his own . . . if I doubled the bet! :D

On that basis, I think we may have seen the last of his pictures.
