See, now I'm going to have to get some of these.

I generally have been buying my apples from Seedling at the Farmers' Market, and they have these, but they are at the "sweet" end of the table. I have REALLY been liking the Ida Reds (forays into other apples for confirmation). Do the Honey Crisps taste like APPLES or just sweet?

Apples. Most I've had (which has been a lot of them) balance fairly evenly between between sweet and tart, depending on age, of course.

    Interested to hear your opinion.

Depends on your taste buds. I've had PLENTY that were extremely tart, and PLENTY that were tooth hurtingly sweet. If you want crunch, and more crunch with juice flying, then the Honeycrisp is going to be your favorite. The honeycrisp is a supercrunchy fuji with more juice and a thinner skin with lighter flesh. It's what a Fuji wants to be, IMO. If flavor is first and foremost in your book, you might be disappointed, you might not. If crunch is first and foremost, you won't find better.

Honeycrisps are on sale at HarvesTime through Wednesday for 98 cents per pound. They're the smallest and least crisp of the season (at least at Harvestime), but they are still very, very good.

Hi- For those people who love honeycrisp but don't like the price, I ran across a really good deal at the Evanston farmer's market Saturday. One of the farmer's from Michigan, John First, normally does a bag sale when he has lots of produce left, and it is time to go home. He does a $5 a bag for as much as you can fit in the bag. You can not double bag it. What I usually do is fill one of his blue bags to the top, and as soon as I give him my $5, I put it into another plastic
bag that I bring with me, because his bags are really flimsy. For $5 you can put in anything in the bag that is remaining. He sells lots of tomatoes, including heirlooms, which he normally sells for $3 a pound. He also sells corn, flowers, basil, eggplant, zucchini and winter squash, and strawberries, cherries, blueberries, peaches raspberries and apples. Of course he does not sell all that every week.

This last Saturday he had tomatoes, winter squash and all kinds of apples left to put in the blue bag, including honeycrisp. One of the things I like about it including the price is that you can pick out the apples that you want, so I can pick out smaller honeycrisp. He also had his cider marked down to $5 a gallon. The bag sale usually starts between 11:30 and noon. This last Saturday he did not have as many tomatoes as he normally does, and when I first went to his stall, the bag sale had not started yet. When I ca,e back 20 minutes later, the bag sale was going on, and the tomatoes were almost gone. I was able to score about 5 heirloom tomatoes though, and a whole bunch of honeycrisp. Hope this helps, Nancy

Was that a total of a few lbs, or a per pound price? I'm assuming that was a total.

Hi- Fro my $5, I got 14 honeycrisp, which were on the smallish side for honeycrisps, but were about the same size as most apples are, and they were not perfect, but they were definitely edible, and I also got 5 medium or large sized heirloom tomatoes. Honeycrisp are difficult to grow, and that is why they are so expensive, and most of them are too large for me to consume in one sitting, and that is why I like to be able to pick out my own. Most of the growers sell them by the quart, and you get maybe 4 extra large apples for $5. The last date for the Evanston farmer's market is November 3, and lots of times you can get some really good deals on the very last day. Immanuel Lutheran Church also does an indoor/outdoor farmer's market the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Henry Brockman and Lloyd Nichols always sell there, and last year Henry had 5 pounds of organic carrots and turnips for $5, and they keep for at least a month. Nichols also had 10 pounds of potatoes for $10. Hope this helps, Nancy

I have noticed a lot of variation in the honeycrisps since they are being grown in more places. I used to like the Minnesota ones best....much better than Washington, but this year it seems that the Michigan ones are the best, and readily available now. Dominicks has them for $1.44/lb, but that may be ending today.

Hi- I was in Dominick's last night, and they were on sale for $1.89/lb. I won't spend that much money. I have enough to last me another 2 weeks anyway, and the ones at Dominick's are too large for one person anyway. The apples originated in Minnesota. As I remember, I think the guy that developed this variety, has the largest honeycrisp orchard in the country, and does a lot of mail order.

BTW- Michigan has a humungous apple crop this year. Everybody should go to the farmer's markets, and buy lots of Michigan apples. Last year the crop was really small. Hope this helps, Nancy

Hi- I had to go to the loop yesterday, and I happened to be right across the street from the Daley Plaza farmer's market, and so I decided to check it out. There were about 7 or 8 people that come to Evanston that were selling there. It looks like they sell a lot more bread and other baked goods than Evanston does. Somebody from Indiana though was selling honeycrisp apples though! I questioned the guy if they were indeed honeycrisp, and he assured me they were, even though they were the size of jonathan apples. Now that I think about it, I suspect that this was another one of those lets fool the customers, who will never know the difference. There was somebody from Michigan there selling red haven peaches, and maybe they were and maybe they weren't. It was feasible that they were, but this same person sells some of my sister's peaches in September, and the signage indicates that they are red haven when they are not. He even told me a few years ago when I bought red havens from him at the Wilmette market, that they were another variety that my sister bred. He buys about half of the peaches that he sells at the farmer's markets from my Sister, and the rest come from his parent's farm.

I passed on the supposed honeycrisp yesterday, but I spent $8 at the Garwood Orchards stand. I bought a tropical melon, eight hot peppers and 2 1/2 pounds of heirloom tomatoes. I know he did not charge me enough money. Has anybody bought tomatoes from Garwood? I haven't tried mine yet. I still had some tomatoes to use up from my garden last night. I am going to make some salsa from the tomatoes that I purchased yesterday. I love homemade salsa, but until recently there have not been enough homegrown tomatoes available to make it. The Daley Plaza market was really busy yesterday. Thanks, Nancy
