Does anyone know where I can get those nice round and sturdy sticks that are used on caramel apples? They are like a dowel rod but have a pointy end like a pencil in order to impale the apple. I am planning on making caramel apples this weekend but I don't think wimpy popsicle/craft sticks are going to cut it.

    thanks!

You could try calling the Affy Tapple factory store and see if they sell them or know where to get them:

I would call Michael's, Hobby Lobby, or Joanne's (sp?). If my crafty wife were around, I could confirm but I've trailed her enough through these stores to be fairly certain one of these places have them.

thanks for the ideas, I ended up going to my tiny little local hardware store and buying dowel rods, "sawing" them to the size I needed and then sanding the ends. it set me back 75 cents and I earned a little DIY cred with my two boys. They impaled the apples and caramel beautifully and looked so much better than popsicle sticks would have.

In the future you can find them on Ebay by searching either candy apple sticks or caramel apple sticks.

Tony's (and probably other Mexican markets) have nice sturdy sticks for elotes that would do the job.

Stores all over Chicago, I've seen the sticks at the Melrose Park location:

well, I am past the caramel apple scene but I would love to serve up my own elotes and impaled mangoes at my next birthday bash (come spring). Thanks for the tip--I adore Tony's! Maybe I can have some weird impaled food party?

I would try Michael's. If they don't have them, I would suggest using popsicle sticks! Work like a charm.
