Bucktown Apple Pie Contest

I'm contemplating entering, but I have to figure out how to tweak my favorite recipe in such a short amount of time!

I ended up swinging past the pie contest late Sunday afternoon. It was slim pickings by the time I got there, but I ended up finding two slices of pie. The first one was really good, the second one not so much, but overall an enjoyable excursion. Next year I'll definitely make it there a bit earlier.

I didn't take shots of my two slices (they were a big mangled), but I did snap a few shots of some of the contest finalists:

I was too stuffed to eat anything, but I found a good place for Chilaquiles while I waited for judging: Sunrise Cafe on Damen & Chicago. Next year I'll plan better—breakfast, no lunch, then lots of pie.

It was a fun event, although I didn't make it out of the first round. I posted pictures of one of my pies (you prepare two identical pies) here.

I am . . . again . . . and hopefully better results. We'll see. I think the look of my pie will be almost identical.

Not my best pie day, although I thought it looked good. Crust was just a little off - a bit too thick and not as flaky as it should have been, a product of the butter blended in too much. Filling a little too mushy. Seasoning a tad too sour. Not bad in all, but certainly not up to great apple pie standards. There were certainly some fantastic looking pies today, and my friends and I tasted some very good ones too.
