Well, this goes to show that every product needs a price ceiling. Next up, $50 bags of ice.

I'm not sure I agree with her when she says that ice is the "single most important ingredient" in a cocktail. She goes on to explain that ice can absorb odors and ruin a drink -- sure bad ice is bad in anything, including a diet coke. And as for the benefits of ice that is sized differently and melts or cools the drinks at different rates -- it's a bonus, but not more important than say, the raw ingredients and the careful manner in which they're mixed, IMO.

In other words, this ice isn't going to make a bad Lime Rickey taste like nirvana.

The ice in a drink is often compared to the rice in sushi. It's not the focus, easily overlooked as just a conveyance/commodity, but it is where things can go wrong very quickly from the very beginning. You're right, good ice doesn't guarantee a good drink, but bad ice sure does guarantee a bad one.

Agreed. I took her comment about the "single most important ingredient" to be hyperbole.

While I usually opt for neat, once in a while I like to enjoy a nice glass of scotch with some $8 ice.

Well, $8 apiece is what I paid for a couple of these ice trays, which I use to make mineral water ice specifically for cocktails. The lids fit snugly into into a rubber-gasket-ed lip, which keeps funky odors out. First saw them at the big Whole Foods on Kingsbury, and was immediately sold.

Great, another profit center for restaurateurs:

    "Still or Sparkling?"

    "Tap or Bottled?"

    "Freezer ice or Tibetan-Glacier-Hand-Carved-Orbs?"

Or you can buy Aqua Ice for $9.99 per box of 50 cubes. What a deal!
