The burger place is supposedly going on the corner of cortez and Western. The 2 artist who have the gallery across the street told me about it. Currently there is no sign or anything. Just a new metal gate that closes over the entrance (blocks off all viewing to the inside). I have walked by it on 2 occasions now late at night, and have heard music and seen flashing lights through the block windows. has me curious. would love a sweet burger place that close to home!

University Market, a Hyde Park fixture, will close 12/14. No more lines of Lab School students waiting for cold sandwiches (some of which were quite good), 10 PM flustered prophylactic runs (you can see the purchasers coming from a mile away), or horrid shriveled limes in porous wooden bins that haven't been cleaned in decades. Hans "King of 57th" Morsbach will be moving some of the sandwiches over to the Medici Bakery. Better keep the damn Westphalian Ham, Hans.

It will probably be the 11th Subway, Kosher or not, on Dempster between McCormick and Milwaukee. It's kinda ridiculous. We counted them once- I think there were seven.

Subway is the worst for franchising. It's at the low-end costwise, but they offer no guarantee of protected territory. They reserve the right to sell a franchise to a guy next door if they could find a sucker who bit. In the vicinity of my office in the Loop, there are 4 Subways within a 1-1/2 block radius, taking up valuable space from better establishments.

Flamingo's website is down as well. So their closure appears to be a reality.

However, there is good ceviche nearby at the newly opened Mount Prospect location of Las Islas Marias (1784 W Golf Rd - corner of Golf and Busse).

I just called the number listed for Flamingo's and got the answering machine with a message something like this:
"You have reached 847/364-9988, formerly Flamingo's restaurant. I'm sorry, but we are temporarily closed. Please join us November 12 for our grand opening as El (xxxxxxx) Seafood Restaurant. We look forward to seeing you then." I listened to the message twice, but still could not pick up exactly what the new name is. Sounded like it began with an F or a V.... I could be totally wrong.
I too am sorry to see Flamingo's go. I very much enjoyed the few meals I had there. I would have gone more often, but for some reason, it always seemed like a long haul from Evanston.

If you venture a short distance east of McCormick on Dempster, you can add another one to your count. There's a new Subway at Dempster and Dodge in Evanston, holding their grand opening today.

It was a long haul for us too, which is exactly why we didn't go as often as we would have liked. After they appeared on Check, Please!, weekends were all but impossible, and because we have a child in school, weeknights were not a great option, either. I guess the Check, Please! effect didn't continue for very long. :(

I think this restaurant was every bit as good -- and in many ways, even better -- than Fonda Del Mar, which makes me think the location was a big factor in their demise.

Interesting, I walked by the last couple of nights, and from the outside at least, it doesn't look close to ready. I guess pushing back the opening only two days isn't bad.

They reopened a few weeks ago, it's now "The Beetle" and a former employee purchased the business from the previous owners.

Looks like Nablus Sweets on Kedzie is now closed. I was surprised that it closed its doors so quickly, but not surprised that it didn't last as there are several other sweets shops in a 3 block radius.
The hubby and I actually walked in while strolling the neighborhood. We were looking to get an ice cream and continue our stroll. Upon entering we saw that there were pictures of delicious ice creams on the menu, but they were dine-in only. The place was dead quiet with no music and no interior decor either. The hubby said it would have been like having an ice cream in the doctors office. We said no thanks and left.
It's a shame that they went under at this location, but I am really rooting for something unique to the neighborhood to be put in its place. PLEASE GOD, not another taco shop or 99 cent store!

Comfort Zone BBQ has closed its Oswego location and reopened right across the Fox River from the Hollywood Casino is Aurora. (opened 11/2/09)

    http://comfortzonebbq.com/

I was just about to post a write up on the Oswego location after a few visits when the move began at the end of the Summer. I figure it would be best to review the newer place as it could be a whole new ball game. Its also closer, so I'll be better able to try a wider assortment.

Just looking through the menu on the website has a couple interesting things to try.

Right across the street from BailyDoyle's Irish Pub, this is part of Aurora's continued Downtown revitalization project.

Hopefully I'll be able to get a few visits in soon and have a more rounded report to give.
