I just heard a report on Fox News (yes, that Fox News) about underground supper clubs. Chefs host meals at private homes for very exclusive guests. You can't get in unless you know the chef or know someone who has been to an event. The cost of the one they mentioned was $55.00 + a bottle of wine. They get around the health and safety codes by calling the payment a "donation."

Does this exist in the Chicago area? Has anyone been to one of these or hosted them?

    It sounds pretty cool.

Friends of mine had Jacky Pluton cook for them in their home. But I think they won him in a raffle.

I don't think there are health and safety codes if you have someone cook for you in your own home. What if you are sick at home and I come over and cook as your mom or sister or friend? Does it become different if you pay me? We've had a chef cook for us and friends in our home, and while I know he had that safety certification because he works in a restaurant, I don't think there was any issue where he had to do some paperwork for the city or anything to cook for us.

We went to one in Paris last month. It is called Hidden Kitchen. Great idea. They host 16 people in their home every Friday and Saturday and it is a 10 course meal with wine for 80 Euro a person. They send you an email the week of with their address. we met some great people there, if you ever have the chance, it is an interesting thing to do.

Except for Clandastino, I don't think any of these places market themselves as being "underground".
