We were in the Vernon Hills area last Friday night and, after some plans were cancelled unexpectedly, went looking for dinner. I saw the sign for Sushi Kushi San3 and decided to try this since I used to go to Sushi Kushi in Lake Forest years ago and loved it.

Apparently this is a new outpost of Sushi Kushi. It is slightly mod-50s-ish in decor with attractive lighting and a bamboo/sand area in the entrance. There is a mix of booths and tables, with seating at the open sushi bar as well. The waiting area is small and somewhat cramped. At 8:00 we were able to get in as a two-top without a reservation with about a fifteen-minute wait, but a reservation would have been best.

I had miso soup, a small salad, California rolls (real crab), shrimp tempura rolls, and sauteed scallops and mushrooms. Everything was fresh and well-presented. My husband ordered some kind of sushi sampler and was very happy with it.

There was a small problem with the scallops and mushrooms where they forgot to put in the order. We asked about it once we had worked through the mountain of food on the table and said that they could either bring it now or take it off the bill (we were fine either way and were not irritated at all). They insisted on comping us a beer and then brought out the appetizer with many apologies. This response went above and beyond what I would expect, especially since we were not complaining or irritated at all.

I don't have the bill anymore, but I think with a large Kirin and two green tea ice creams it was about $70 before tip. With the amount of food we ordered, the quality of the food, the good service, and attractive surroundings, I thought that was very reasonable. If you live in the area or are visiting, this is a great addition to Vernon Hills.

Good to know, thanks for the posting. I used to enjoy the original Sushi Kushi in Lake Forest and then we happened in there after a Check! Please and that was the end of that. Wonder if they have any lunch specials for when I'm shopping at the mall.

Looks like prices at lunch are mostly between $7 and $10. They have a $9.95 bento box which looks like a good deal. Just remember, no lunch on Sunday.

We went to Tsukasa last night (not my choice) and I would much rather have been at Sushi Kushi San3. Would have been cheaper too. Sigh.
