Mr. Pie and I were at Leona's to celebrate a friend's birthday, when much to his dismay, they no longer make onion rings! The entire night was ruined and his future looked bleak until I reminded him about the power of LTH. Surely someone remembers these onion rings and knows a place that sells the same kind. They had the smooth, pale, crumbless type of coating and were huge. He describes them as "doughy." Any suggestions on who makes a good substitute so he can be happy again?

My first guess would be Popeye's Chicken.
It's a battered, not breaded ring, somewhat spicy.
    Not all stores make it.

did you ask if you could still order them? in my experience, Leona's is very accommodating about making items that used to be on their menu.

Sort of. Pie Dude asked if they still make the onion rings and our waiter said no.

No joke. They're very good at Popeye's. They usually don't make them until you order them, so you're always getting them hot out of the fryer (you can expect to wait 5-10 minutes after ordering).

Really depends on the location. I've had them where they were OK (not great) and other locations they've bordered on awful.

Had some great thick, doughy yet crisp, smooth-style onion rings (surprisingly) at Easy Bar.
    Nice serving for $3, too.

Buffalo Wild Wings has this type of Onion Rings.
Many locations including Lincoln Park, Skokie, and reportedly opening in Evanston.

Confirmed, once again, that Easy Bar has perfect onion rings. The batter has the slight sweetness of Belgian waffle batter. Oh my god, were they satisfying.
    Great pairing with Macallan 12.
Of course, it always helps that the Bears put on a good show, too.

I had some great onion rings at Toon's yesterday, along with some of their wings.

Battered and smooth, although maybe not giant, but also not small. Very well seasoned and perfectly cooked.

And on Monday's they are half price!

    Great rings at Toons.
Boston Blackie's also does a good job with the giant style. Varies by location. Can be too greasy.

I don't know if they are doughy, but the onion rings at Murphy's Bleachers are battered and VERY good!
    Leek
