The New Yorker recently profiled baumkuchen (spit cake... as in, baked on a spit), saying that the closest source to New York is our own Lutz Cafe, and another bakery called Sweet World Pastry Shop. Has anyone been to Sweet World, or know where it is? I'd like to try something that, when sliced, looks like the rings of a tree trunk.

"To get long" meant to make do, to make well of whatever we had; it was about having a long view, which was endurance, and a long heart, which was hope.

I have not been there, but if you type sweetworldpastry.com into your browser, you'll find that it's in Gladstone Park on the northwest side. It was also mentioned in this article about Gladstone Park in Time Out Chicago.

I've been to Sweet World a few times as it is but a few doors North of Andy's Polish Deli a long time favorite of mine. Sweet World typically has a sandwich board parked outside advertising deals on pierogi by the dozen and a selection of Polish bakery items. Everything I've had from Sweet World has been solid, though not necessarily memorable enough for me to add it as a regular stop when I visit Andy's. I've not tried the baumkuchen.

    Enjoy,
    Gary
