Afterwards we went into Wally's to check it out. Wyatt's first comment: "It smells like your soup." The coolest thing was a 55-gallon drum of sauerkraut. The scariest thing was a 55-gallon drum of salted fish. (At least I hope it was salted....) The thing that might lure me back-- a surprisingly wide assortment of apples, at about 40% of the price for the same varieties at Whole Foods.

Wally's is a good source of some regional produce. When they are in season, you can buy an entire box of real Vidalia onions there for a song. A tip for storing them: tie them, onion by onion, in panty hose legs and hang them in a cool pantry. Once a year, I have to go through the gantlet of disapproving glances at my local Osco as I buy panty hose.

P.S. I only buy produce at local ethnic markets or farmers markets in the summer. BTW: The Vietnamese grocery on Broadway at Argyle in the mall had fresh durian on sale today at 99 cents/lb.
