In a couple of Greek-diner breakfast type places, I've ordered grapefruit juice. In this type of place, I would expect to get juice from concentrate and not fresh-squeezed, and I was fine with that.

However, what I was served was something that appeared to be a Tang-like, hot pink drink made from a mix. When I say hot pink, I mean this thing was radioactive. There wasn't much taste to it, but whoever manufactured it sure did not skimp on the food coloring.

In one restaurant, my look of horror was so obvious that they removed the drink from the table and didn't charge me. In another restaurant, I asked if this was grapefruit juice and was told yes, and that was that.

This has been in my personal "WTF?" file for awhile, so just wondering if anyone with more restaurant experience knows what this stuff is.

To me it sounds like what a lot of bars use as "grapefruit juice"--ie, sugary, vaguely grapefruit flavored drink from a gun. It's often fairly hot pink, and always disgusting. In bars and diners I always ask if their grapefruit is from the gun; if it is, I take a pass.

Strangely, I think Jane's uses this stuff, which is fairly out of character for them. I learned the hard way.

Interesting, thanks. Even with some restaurant and bar experience I had been spared working with or seeing this stuff. Yuck.

I just inadvertently bought some of this stuff, labeled "grapefruit juice," at Garden Fresh. It came in a box, from Poland, I think. It did have a grapefruit taste, but fluorescent pink color and Tang-like consistency.

As a youngster in the early 70's Tang briefly sold a grapefruit flavor, also hot pink in appearance. Hmmm...perhaps some time-traveling industrial espionage at work?
