    My family and I are taking a trip to Tokyo in April. We are super excited for the trip. We'd like to find someone who can give us a behind the scenes tour of the giant fish market. We don't speak Japanese.

    Has anyone done this?

    Hi, yes you will definitely want to visit the Tsukiji fish market and the adjoining food market. Be sure to eat at several of the food stalls within the fish market. It doesn't get any fresher than that. I was there with a friend who is a native Japanese speaker so can't help with a specific guide.. I am sure you can find a local guide or day tour or half-day tour once you reach Tokyo. Be sure to get there very early to get in on the auction action.

    Just make sure to check the days they are open/closed. Their 2010 calendar is here - http://www.tsukiji-market.or.jp/etc/calendar/2010.html
    Red = closed
    Blue = specially open

    When we were last there, they had started closing off some of the auctions because there were too many tourists, so you might want to be aware of that too (April might be considered a touristy month because of cherry blossoms at the beginning of the month and Golden Week at the end of April/early May).

    Don't worry if you can't find a guide. Everyone at the stalls was very friendly and helpful to us, as long as you don't get in the way. We even got to sample many things for free :D

    Don't know of any guides-
    but I'm still kicking myself for not buying any of the amazing Sushi knives I saw for sale there
    in a few of the stalls,in the surrounding Market area-
    Do some research prior to going- because you can get some excellent knives there.

    As a side note: The Section of Tokyo with the infamous "short rest" /aka Love Hotels is not far from the Fish Market, so when I went- to get
    there at the very early hour needed to see the Auction/Market action required a "plan" (connecting Trains from Narita,etc)-
    so it worked out best for us to stay in this section- called Shibuya section, if I remember correctly,
    where all of the small side streets sport Vending Machine, selling merchandise of the sort that
    would be/could be used in such a hotel-kinda like a "Lovers Lane" vending machine- fascinating stuff!
    Very much a memorable part of my Tokyo experience!
    :D :wink:
