Mike Sula already noted Royal Kebab in The Reader back in November, but I missed that review, and so stumbled upon Royal Kebab today completely unawares, and hungry. Wow, what a place. This is a Polish kebab house, and the signature dish is the marinated pork kebab, served myriad ways -- on a pita, alone on a platter or, as I enjoyed it today, as a sandwich on "middle eastern" bread. The meat itself is the highlight -- savory, crisped on the edges, and plentiful - but the garlic sauce (combined in my case with the hot sauce, as well) carries it over the top. The sandwich also has a unique (in my experience) dressing, including tomato, cucumber and corn. The sandwich is also huge, and more than a bit messy. Very friendly family running the operation, clean and compact and just not quite like anything else I've bumped into before. One last note, consistent with the "royal" character of this restaurant, they have a pair of solid gold trash cans at the exit way (OK, metal-fleck gold painted, but isn't that enough?) I wonder if there are other Polish kebab houses in Chicago that I've somehow missed out on?
