Hey guys, a couple weeks ago I heard about something called sushi pizza: http://www.flickr.com/photos/geofflow/101463129/

It sounds intriguing and is totally new to me. Does anyone know if you can find it in Chicago anywhere?

    Hmmmm.... neither pizza nor sushi.

Looks very close to an Smoked Salmon Flatbread appetizer I had recently at Tommy Nevins in Evanston.

(Garlic flat bread topped with smoked salmon, sour cream, avocado and spicy tomato relish.)

The name may be "totally new" but the dish isn't.

You can easily replicate it using a ready-to-bake pizza crust. Just bake the crust, let it cool, spread a thin layer of cream cheese/sour cream (I've had it with dill added). Layer on some smoked salmon and garnish (I prefer finely diced red onion and hard-boiled egg). Voila!

    Call it whatever you like.

According to the website it's deep-fried sushi rice. So it's thematically-consistent, but still misguided.

Not in Chicago, but I was gonna make a post soon about a restaurant in Louisville, "Dragon King's Daughter", that is taking the eastern fusion thing in a pretty fun direction. They do have some sushi themed pizzas...

I hate kettle cooked chips. It takes too much effort to crunch through them.

As popularity of sushi/sashimi shows no sign of letting up, places are going to try to package or makeover fish in different ways, like this "pizza." Next up (if not actually already offered somewhere on this big and increasingly seafood depleted planet of ours): sushi pierogi, sushi tacos, sushi McMuffin, etc.

One reason for sushi/sashimi popularity is mere trendiness. But another reason is that every day, print and broadcast stories tell us that for our health we should eat more fish. It's not surprising that people may respond by eating more fish--especially if there's a way to do it that they enjoy.

Not to minimize the threat to fish, our oceans, and the planet. That's nothing to scoff at. I just think the increased consumption of fish in all its forms is an inevitable result of (and rational response to) the messages we receive every day from the media. Your efforts to divert more consumption toward corned beef are commendable!

I think that looks pretty good- like the bowl-o-sushi you can buy at Mitsuwa, but with more fish.
